In July 2015, the German gastronomy blog Sternefresser.de hosted its tasting event BottleTank for the second time. This time around the gourmet think-tank wanted to find the best gin from Germany. The judging panel was comprised of 16 illustrious sommeliers, bartenders, distillers and journalists. Each one had nominated one gin, which meant a knockout competition of 16 gins, all of which were to be tasted pure and blind. The following two made it to the final: Granit Gin from Bavaria and Gin Sul from Hamburg, with the latter eventually taking the spoils.
Granit Bavarian Gin, from the Penninger distillery, unites international drinking culture with esteemed local distilling tradition. Typical botanicals like cardamom, coriander, and lemon peel are joined by rarer Bavarian ingredients like meum, gentian, and lemon balm. The result is a very pure and mild gin with a seductively floral and fruity flavour.
The BottleTank champion Gin Sul is distilled in small batches by the Altona Spirits Company, right there in the central Hamburg district of Altona. Alongside juniper, common gum cistus dominates from the west coast of Portugal dominates the aromas of this glorious spirit. Further botanicals including rosemary, lemon peel, and rose petals combine to provide a dazzling and heady final impression, making Gin Sul the liquid ignition for that lightly melancholic wanderlust that the Portugese call "saudade".
