Moonshine since 1920

If you go back 100 years in US history, you come across one of the biggest crises in the country's history. In 1920 the prohibition law was enacted, which meant that it was not allowed to produce, trade, sell and of course buy alcohol throughout the USA. So there was no more alcohol to buy at the legal level. Distilleries were shut down, the people could no longer even get a beer after work. The consequence of the prohibition law was that illegal distilleries sprouted from the ground. One spirit drink made the biggest waves: Moonshine Whiskey. As everyone knows, Americans love whiskey, so the logical consequence in the 1920s was that you just burned your own. Moonshine was the name of the Schnäpse back then, as they were mostly burned at night in moonlight in small scales. The advantage of night distilling was that you couldn't get caught so quickly. Making moonshines is comparatively easy, which is why many private individuals started making them. The Schnäpse, which tasted more or less bad, were in great demand on the black market, making illegal burning a lucrative business. But because the moonshines were often of very inferior quality, the illegal whiskey distillates fell into disrepute. In order to check whether the spirit was edible, a test was used in which a small amount of the moonshine was added to a Löffel and the schnapps then added. If the flame was red, this meant that lead was contained in the alcohol. Besides lead, the biggest health risk was methanol. If none of the harmful substances were present, the Moonshine was placed in preserving jars and sold.

Ole Smoky

The Moonshines of the brand Ole Smoky - meanwhile legally produced - are still being sold in preserving jars today. Ole Smoky is the most popular brand in the USA and is based in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. In addition to the many different, partly flavoured Ole Smoky Moonshines, you will also find spirits from Georgia Moon, Midnight Moon and Popcorn Sutton in our online shop. The latter is also a Tennessee-based producer of the legendary Schnitzes, which pays tribute to the allegedly last true Moonshiner Marvin Popcorn Sutton.
