Balvenie 12 YO Double Wood Single Malt Whisky celebrates its 25th birthday in 2018.
At the beginning of the 1980s, malt master David Stewart developed a process for the production of this whisky, which is now known as "Wood Finishing". This includes, for example, the step that 12 years of ex-Bourbon barrels made of American oak and Hodsheads are used for the storage of the Balvenie Double Wood.
Ageing
The ageing in the bourbon barrels gives the whisky, among other things, nuances of its fine taste and golden colour. The storage time is about ten years for the Bourbon barrel maturation. The Balvenie Double Wood matures after 12 years in ex-Oloroso sherry barrels made of Spanish oak. It matures in these barrels for the last two years, which makes the single malt so round and complex.
Taste and aroma
The taste of the Single Malt is soft and balanced. The complex Balvenie Double Wood 12 years melts thanks to the warm note of nutmeg with a pleasant, nutty sweetness on the tongue and lies on the palate with a note of cinnamon and sherry.
The aroma is fruity and the sherry is particularly present. Honey and vanilla are subtle but nevertheless perceptible. In addition, fine raisin tones come through again and again.
Finish
The Balvenie Double Wood 12 Years' finish is long and warming. In the aftertaste, the spicy oak, which was more present in nuances before, as well as the vanilla are particularly accentuated.
Awards
The complexity, which is due to the exquisite ingredients and the storage in two types of casks, is not only appreciated by fans of the Balvenie Double Wood 12 Years. The single malt from Scotland has also received international recognition for this.
In 2014 the youngster won gold at the International Spirit Competition. One year later, he was at the top of the podium at "The Scotch Whisky Masters" (The Spirits Business).
