As always, hardcore gin fans rub their hands together with glee as they await the annual special edition from the cult Black Forest distillery: Monkey 47 Distiller's Cut 2016. Finally it's here, but it won't be around for long as the coveted bottles sell out in a very short time. So if you want to try it, you should pick it up straight away!
What's in store for you with this special edition gin? This year's spirit gives the staring role of “species rara” - the changing botanical which defines each year's Distiller's Cut – to honey. But not just any honey: they use Black Forest fir honey, a spicy variety with a greenish black hue. The other 47 botanicals for which the gin is named are macerated and extracted in a two-part distillation process, and the resulting spirit is aged for three months in clay pots. Finally, it is combined with local spring water and brought to drinking strength.
