The brand Maker's Mark is a real old-timer when it comes to the realms of American whiskies. The distillery was first opened in 1889 and then closed down a few years down the line, only to be reopened in 1953 by Bill Samuels Senior. He developed Maker's Mark and released it in 1954.
This Maker's Mark is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon. In order to earn this title, the whiskey has to be produced in the state of Kentucky where it is also supposed to age for at least one year. Maker's Mark meets the criteria perfectly. Interestingly, the bottle does not say “whiskey” but “whisky”. This is explained by Samuels' intent to honour his Scottish roots. And in Scotland, it is only whisky, never whiskey.
The amber-coloured Maker's Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon is distilled from a grain with with a 70% share of corn while the rest consists of wheat and malted barley. The bourbon is very soft and round which is already hinted at in the nose thanks to notes of grain, raisins and honey. It tastes deliciously with aromas of vanilla, orange, honey and several spices. An absolute must-have for fans of bourbon!
