Mind-blowing and a must-read

If I told you it took me more than ten years to read, would you believe me? It's a very long book! Interminable! I just finished today, after purchasing this book in 2005, and reading it regularly since about November of last year. I kind of wish there were an abridged version of about 200 pages or so.

At any rate, former President Clinton said it was the most influential book he'd read, and in conspiracy circles, the rumors were always that the author was asked to catalog and organize records of the New World Order. So, in spite of Mr. Clinton's positive recommendation (that guy's a clown), I went looking for evidence of conspiracies, and indeed, found them. They're certainly in there. The basics of it are secular humanism, or, if you will, "civilizing the natives." Imagine a Brit beneath the skin saying, "Wouldn't it be great if all countries were as diplomatic and as orderly as the British? And if we all accepted English as a common language? And Anglophilism as a basis for modern culture?"

He's an American, but with strong British sympathies. He does agree that these rich people that run modern Europe (more akin to Masons), are even more secretive than we foil-hat wearers say they are.

What's more, is that his reading of history is downright insightful. He's obviously a brilliant man. That is inarguable. Whether he's wrong about Anglophilism being the way the world should be, or that Western Civilization never reconciled itself with Christianity being the dominant issue that we face (I agree with that one) -- both those are ancillary to the general perspecuity with which he views the world. It's like he wears x-ray specs.

I found his passages about the middle class towards the end of the book almost mind-blowing. He even predicts the modern climate today in his passages about "Irrational Activism", and one has to remind himself, "This book was written in 1964!" He predicts the emasculating climate of sexism that exists today that, while it claims that sexism exists against females, it opposes any balance with the male gender. As a male, I read many interesting things that go unsaid by our culture. Because if they are said by our culture, they go against the tide of feminism.

This was an ambitious undertaking to say the least, but the ambition was realized...if you want to know what has happened and why anywhere in the world, or at sea, in the last two hundred years or so, this will give you the whole thing. It is really a text book...and one requiring that you bring something to it. It centers on international relations and economics primarily but with the anthropological, psychological and social back grounds all laid out. He always has an interesting take on things, no real template beyond a sort of academic arrogance which is a little annoying, but in a way justified. I think it would be pretty difficult for any of the standard writers in these subjects to stay in the ring with him very long. If you get nothing else out of the 1300 page read it should be a little bit of loosening your grip on "politics today" ..it's all happened before, and it's happening again, and it may be bad for you, but, it is probably good for someone else, so, quit grousing about fiat money if that is a problem for you and take action to avoid its inevitable conclusion...standing still expecting something good to happen..or worse, justice, is not going to cut it. Also, you will look more kindly on your local neighborhood conspiracy theorist because this history is full of them, mostly successful...Even paranoids have real enemies. fair Notice. I was one of Quigleys students about 5o years ago at the GT Foreign service school...he was arrogant then too..but, a real super star professor. Taught the history of civilization from his book of 250 pages or so, and I don't know anyone, including the much publicized Clinton who does not remember the experience. Pat yourself on the back if you stay with it. It's not boring at all...just long.

Unconventional account of world history

I am a practicing attorney with a background in history. Having just read Tragedy and Hope, I found that it presents a fascinating survey of world history that is different from that found in college textbooks and other conventional versions of history. Unlike such conventional accounts, Quigley does not merely explain what has happened, but he explains why it has in the way that it has. Quigley strives to provide a fuller explanation of the underlying causes of historical events, trends, and the current state of affairs (as of the mid-1960's). He gives greater credit to inherent differences between the cultures and value structures of different groups of people and to the varying influences of such factors as the availability of medical, agricultural, and weapons technologies. He draws and explains broad generalizations that may be objected to by certain groups but that are nevertheless supported and that are useful for one to gain an overall understanding of history. In all, Quigley weaves a concise yet thorough and ultimately fascinating account of world history in recent centuries.

Although Tragedy and Hope is most famous for its few passages in which Quigley describes his finding that the course of recent history has been determined at least partially by a small group of elite planners, it does not appear that Quigley mentions such finding as the primary point of the book. Rather, Quigley's account that such planners exist seems to be included as merely one fact that, along with innumerable other facts, helps to tell a uniquely accurate story of recent human history. Omitting such an important fact, as do most conventional accounts of history, would result in a story that is incomplete.

I would recommend Tragedy and Hope for any educated reader who already has a fair understanding of recent history and who is open to an account of history that sheds new light on the causal connections underlying recent human experience.

Some omissions are simply not to be brooked, as are some books, not to be missed. This is both.) As was Weston Price's, Nutrition & Physical Degeneration an impassible chasm's only bridge across, so this. If ever you've in your most shadowed corner, wondered simply, "But how?" comes the clarion answer, "Only read." I enjoin you from The Other Side, take the first step: the planks will bear up beneath even the heaviest weight. Truth always does.

This book will reveal the true nature of those who have controlled the resent past - 1805 to 1950; and by conscientiously studying this book, will reveal the true nature of those who are controlling our present and want complete and total control of our future.

It's quite a tome and takes some confronting, but if you have the guts to discover the personalities behind the masks, the true evil of those who already have everything and then some, go for it; and may you never be the same again.
