How ads work

We’ve simplified the choices for ad formats that show before or after your video to improve creator revenue. We’ve removed the individual ad choices for pre-roll, post-roll, skippable, and non-skippable ads. Now, when you turn on ads for new long-form videos, we show your viewers pre-roll, post-roll, skippable, or non-skippable ads when appropriate. This change makes the recommended best practice to turn on all ad formats, the standard for everyone. Your choices for mid-roll ads haven’t changed. We’ve also retained your ad choices for existing long-form videos, unless you change the monetization settings.

Once you’re in the YouTube Partner Program, you can choose to have ads shown on your content and make money off those ads.

Types of ads

Ads on Shorts are skippable video or image ads that show up between Shorts in the Shorts Feed. The Shorts Monetization Module allows your channel to get shared revenue from these ads.

When enabling ads among your Shorts, think about the kind of content you will be uploading. Remember that Shorts ads are placed randomly between Shorts in the Shorts player. Focus on what you can control. Make sure every Short you upload contains original content, follows our advertiser-friendly guidelines and entertains your viewers. This is the best way to ensure you don’t miss out on any Shorts revenue share.

 Being brand safe

To increase the sharing revenue from the ads between your Shorts, they have to comply with some guidelines:

  • Only views of your Shorts that follow our advertiser-friendly guidelines are eligible for revenue sharing.
  • Non-original Shorts are ineligible for revenue sharing. Examples of non-original Shorts are:
    • Unedited clips from movies or TV shows.
    • Reuploading other creators' content from YouTube or other platforms.
    • Compilations with no original content added.
  • Artificial or fake views of Shorts, such as from automated click or scroll bots, make Shorts ineligible for revenue sharing.
