ut thirty-five Jesuits in the missions ofMaryland, all of whom with two or three exceptionswere English. They were men of apostolic zeal anddisinterestedness. The mission at Bohemia, in CecilCounty was founded by Father Mansell (1706), thepriests of this mission carrying the Faith into Dela-ware. St, Inigoes house was established in 1708 andlater a chapel was added. Hickory Mission, fromwhich Baltimore was afterwards attended, was estab-lished in 1720, and St. Josephs Chapel, Deer Creek(the Rev. John Digges, Jr.), in 1742. We find theRev. Benedict Neale at Priests Ford, Harford County,in 1747. St. Ignatiuss Church, Hickory, was estab-lished (1792) by the Rev. Sylvester Boarman. About1755, 900 Catholic Acadian refugees settled in Mary-land, but the Catholics were forbidden to give themhospitality. A Catholicschool was established in Baltimore (1757) by MaryAnn March, but was closed on account of the violentpersecution of Protestant clergymen. The historicWhitemarsh mission was founded in 1760 by the Rev.John Lewis. Frederick Chapel (St. Johns) was builtby Father Williams, S.J.; the church ^^■as built in1800 by the Rev. John Dubois, at that time the onlypriest between Baltimore and St. Louis. The presentchurch was consecrated in 1837. In 1903 the Jesuitsgave up the church and novitiate. The Jesuit novi-tiate was opened at Georgetown, D. C, 1806. Duringthe War of 1812, it was at St. Inigoes and Frederickfor a few years, then returned to Georgetown, wasremoved to Whitemarsh about 1820, and to Frederickin 1833, whence in 1903 it was finally removed to St.Andrews-on-the-Hudson, near Poughkeepsie, NewYork.
