Summary

[edit]
Description
  • English: Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931), "Arminius". Self-portrait as a gladiator (retiarius), at the Greek theater of Taormina. Catalog number: 0108 B. Cm 12x17. The title recalls Gaius Iulius Arminius, who defeated the Romans in the battle of Teutoburg. His name was translated into German as "Hermann", which was the name of Gloeden's father. However, we have no information about him ever figthing as a gladiator.
The image was taken by 1893, when a shot including Gloeden in the same disguise was published in the article by Ludwig Pietsch (1824-1911), Kunst und Photographie, in the "Velhagen & Klasings Monatshefte", 1893-94, p. 393. The shot belongs to a shoot in which Gloeden's friend Giovanni Crupi also participated, who in his catalogue he has a photo identical to another of Gloeden, even featuring the same catalogue number as Gloeden's.
Date Within 1893.
