Recall reports

An effort to recall three of the five members of the Woodland Park School District RE-2 school board did not go to a vote in 2022. Board President David Rusterholz, board Vice President David Illingworth II, and board member Suzanne Patterson were named in the recall petitions.[1][2][3]

The Teller County Clerk's Office did not verify enough petition signatures to put the recalls against Illingworth and Patterson on the ballot. Recall supporters did not file a petition against Rusterholz as they did not collect enough signatures.[4][5]

Recall supporters

Recall supporters published the following statement about why they pursued a recall on their website:[6]

Since the time immediately following their 2021 election to the Woodland Park School Board, David Rusterholz, David Illingworth II, and Suzanne Patterson have repeatedly been both negligent in their responsibilities to the Woodland Park community at large and have violated both policy and Colorado law.

Members of the community have made repeated calls for these School Board members to meet their commitments to the School District and to operate with transparency and accountability. These calls have been met with both silence and open defiance.

It has then fallen upon the voters of the Woodland Park School District to exercise their right to initiate the recall process and elect into these Board positions citizens who will uphold the integrity of the office and provide positive representation of our district and community.[7]

Recall opponents

The board members refuted the allegations against them. They said were dedicated to transparency and openness. “A small group representing radical ideologies and national teacher unions that kept your child from attending school and forced them into masks is trying to undo what we've achieved together,” Illingworth said.[8]
