David Meuse participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on October 2, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and David Meuse's responses follow below.[4]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | Gun violence prevention, retaining and supporting our young people and young families, supporting public education[5][6] | ” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | Gun violence prevention: like many others, I've been profoundly disturbed by the incidents in Newtown, Parkland, and Las Vegas. Although I support efforts to improve school security, I don't agree that what should be our last line of defense should be our ONLY line of defense.
Making NH a better place to live, work, and grow for young people and young families. As our population ages, I'm concerned that we do so little of substance to encourage young people and young families to stay in NH or move here. Public pre-K, family leave and medical insurance, expanded job opportunities, and lower higher education costs are all part of the mix.Cite error: Invalid |
” |
Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. David Meuse answered the following:
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?
“ | President Abraham Lincoln for his intellect, his pragmatism, his ability to work with his former enemies, and his ability to rise above tragedy in his own life to do what had to be done to keep America from splintering and end slavery.[6] | ” |
“ | "We Are the Changes We Seek: The Speeches of Barack Obama"[6] | ” |
“ | Honesty, integrity, compassion, curiosity[6] | ” |
“ | I'm a good listener, I tell the truth, I work hard to understand the root of a problem, and I want to make a difference.[6] | ” |
“ | To work hard, to embrace the highest ethical standards, to have an open mind, to be available to voters, to show up for votes, and to lead when leadership is needed.[6] | ” |
“ | I would like to be remembered for being part of moving NH forward in areas like gun violence prevention, economic opportunity, health care, and environmental legislation.[6] | ” |
“ | The assassination of John F. Kennedy. I was 7.[6] | ” |
“ | I worked doing greenhouse work for a florist. I was 13 when I started. My first job out of college was as a combination news reporter and booth announcer for WMUR-TV in Manchester, NH.[6] | ” |
“ | I took a date to see the play Equus. I didn't know there was a nude scene and we had front row seats. I'm pretty sure I was still blushing two days later.[6] | ” |
“ | Thanksgiving. Family, great food, football, and no snow (hopefully).[6] | ” |
“ | I often read, but I'm not sure I have a favorite book. Ones that have stuck with me are Doris Kearns Goodwin's 'Team of Rivals' and Kenneth O'Donnell and David Powers "Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye."[6] | ” |
“ | Jon Snow in 'Game of Thrones' (except for the parts where he gets stabbed and shot through with arrows)[6] | ” |
“ | My wife's paintings. She's a very accomplished watercolor artist.[6] | ” |
“ | "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" by The Flaming Lips.[6] | ” |
“ | Losing 10 pounds.[6] | ” |
“ | The sheer size of the House makes it a challenge to develop relationships with a majority of your colleagues.[6] | ” |
“ | Yes. It's beneficial but not essential.[6] | ” |
“ | Aging population, lack of treatment options for people with mental health and drug problems, funding education and mental health, economic opportunity, climate change and contaminated water.[6] | ” |
“ | Mutual respect.[6] | ” |
“ | It's essential to build relationships with other legislators not only to get anything done--but to truly understand the depth and impact of the challenges you are trying to address. if you're not building relationships, you're not doing the job.[6] | ” |
“ | I believe a non-partisan citizen commission is the best way to achieve fair redistricting.[6] | ” |
“ | Health, Human Services, and Elderly Affairs / Criminal Justice and Public Safety / Science, Technology and Energy[6] | ” |
“ | No.[6] | ” |
“ | One conversation the sticks with me was with a man who had retired but went back to work to help his daughter pay for her education at UNH because he didn't want her to be financially strapped by loans through her 20s and 30s.[6] | ” |

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
