Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Teng's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Balance the Budget: America is long overdue for a balanced budget and a balanced budget amendment. Washington does not have a revenue problem. In fact, it has hauled in record taxes during Jason Chaffetz's tenure. What Washington and Congress have is a spending problem. The nation cannot reduce the debt if the federal government habitually spends billions more than it takes in. Partisan gridlock is not an acceptable reason for failure to balance the budget - it's an excuse. Republicans need to have the courage to stand on principle. The American dream depends on it.
  • Return Land Back to Utah: The Federal government has no need to be a land owner in the State of Utah, with a few exceptions for military installations, post offices, courts, etc. However, 66.5% of Utah land is owned by the federal government -- only Nevada has more federal lands. It has been 120 years since Utah was granted statehood, it has proved its worth, and it is time for the federal government to give stewardship over Utah's lands back to Utah.
  • Repeal and Replace Obamacare: Obamacare is a disaster. It has raised the cost of health insurance and replaced what have been personal decisions with oppressive government mandates. Repealing Obamacare is not enough. We need to replace it with real reforms that allow individuals more choices and more access to portable policies.
  • Return Education to the States: Education funding and policy decisions belong at the state and local levels. Parents and teachers know what is best for Utah's children's education and are more invested in the outcome. That is why those making education decisions need to be in Utah, where they will be held directly accountable to the parents, teachers and voters.
  • Protect Human Life: I am proudly pro-life because every human life has value. Elective abortion for personal or social convenience should be illegal. Abortions should be rare and only considered in exceptional circumstances, such as when pregnancy is the result of incest or rape, when the life or health of the mother is judged by competent medical authority to be in serious jeopardy, or when the fetus is known by competent medical authority to have severe defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth.
