So many important ideas for education in this wonderful short piece.
"I learned these skills by experiencing them as a teacher in development. Teacher preparation programs and schools need to treat teachers the same way we would want to treat our students—with faith in our abilities, confidence in our growth, and compassion for how we show up in what can be a tough world." I have just learnt of this amazing UK school which was founded over 100 years ago, so ahead of its time! Summerhill School believes lessons should be a child's choice and learning an invitation. They value the importance of play: "At Summerhill, play belongs to the child. We do not dress up learning situations so that the play will be 'productive', we do not look on and evaluate what they might learn from this or that game. Our children just play — and they can do it pretty well all day if they want to". Despite this, most students decide to sit for GCSE exams when they are ready (can be earlier or later than UK norm), demonstrating that children are more in-tune with their development and needs than are often given credit for. This 'Freedom Not Licence/Freedom with Responsibility' approach that the school takes equates to "do as you like - but you must not interfere with somebody else's freedom" and as a result they have common sense guidelines/rules such as 'no playing drums at 4am'. They are a democratic, self-governing community where children have equal vote to adults in the weekly meeting where decisions are made. It has elements of homeschooling, Ross Greene's CPS and alternative schooling philosophies such as Montessori and Steiner. However, never have I seen a school or system take a child's choice/autonomy to this level. We need to take some important lessons from this 100 year old UK example. #AlternativeEducation #EducationReform #HolisticEducation #BehaviourReframe #SelfDetermination #EmotionalDevelopment #ChildDevelopment

When families come to visit Westtown School the first comment I always get is "How do I let my son go at such a young age." I think when you step back from the idea and dive deeper into the WHY, you realize this can be a life changing opportunity. Here are 5 reasons why I believe families should consider boarding school: 1 - Academic Excellence: Private boarding schools often boast rigorous academic programs, smaller class sizes, and highly qualified teachers. This environment can foster a culture of academic excellence, encouraging students to reach their full potential and excel in their studies. 2 - Personal Development: Living away from home in a boarding school environment can promote independence, self-discipline, and responsibility. Students learn to manage their time effectively, balance academic and extracurricular activities, and develop essential life skills that prepare them for college and beyond. 3 - Diverse Community: Boarding schools typically attract students from diverse backgrounds, both geographically and culturally. This diversity enriches the learning experience by exposing students to different perspectives, ideas, and traditions, fostering a more inclusive and globally-minded community. 4 - Extracurricular Opportunities: Private boarding schools often offer a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, clubs, and community service initiatives. Students have the opportunity to explore their interests, develop talents, and pursue leadership roles, contributing to a well-rounded education and personal growth. 5 - Preparation for College: Boarding schools are known for their comprehensive college preparatory programs, which include guidance counseling, standardized test preparation, and college admissions support. Students receive personalized attention and support throughout the college application process, increasing their chances of gaining admission to top-tier universities and pursuing their academic and career goals. #BoardingSchoolExperience #FamilyFriendlyEducation #PrivateSchoolCommunity #DiscoverBoardingSchools #QualityEducation #BoardingSchoolLife #FamilyFirstEducation #IndependentSchools #BoardingSchoolAdventures #EducationalJourney #CloseKnitCommunity #ExploreBoardingSchools #AcademicExcellence #LifeAtBoardingSchool #SupportiveEnvironment #StudentSuccessStories #HomeAwayFromHome #GlobalEducationExperience #BoardingSchoolTradition Tejan Walcott To learn more about Westtown School and the boys soccer program visit: https://www.westtown.edu/

This face is the joy my heart feels when twice in one week I get great news from students - one who applied and was accepted into college after a presentation I gave at a church on Sunday and another student I wrote a recommendation for who was accepted into a service academy in New York. I'm so grateful for the opportunities the Lord gives me to sow into others' futures! P.S. The kid in the photo is mine 😊😅

The way to teach history today!
"Is there a way to teach...history without either 'vilifying' individuals or glossing over the thornier parts of their legacies?" asks Alex Pinelli in #AHAPerspectives. "Absolutely. My students proved it last year, during our lesson on Columbus."
