Our researchers are shedding light on key factors that affect survival after childhood leukemia relapse. The new study found that tailoring treatment for each patient is important, as variables like the type of leukemia, how quickly a relapse ensues, and individual genetic traits can make a big difference. The research offers hope for new, future therapeutic approaches and overall improved outcomes for kids. Learn more: http://ms.spr.ly/6041m5WdF.

As CAR-T therapy becomes a more prevalent cancer treatment, new patterns are emerging, revealing complex side effects in younger patients. A recent CHOP study reveals new insights into non-inflammatory causes of rare neurological issues of paraparesis and quadriparesis in children, adolescents and young adults following CAR-T therapy, a type of immunotherapy used to treat B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Read more in the American Society of Hematology Clinical News article below.

Providing mental health services to students where they are, in the school setting, is crucial to helping them achieve healthy futures. We need to come together to identify scalable solutions for school-based mental health services so our youth have the resources they need to thrive. Thank you to Independence Blue Cross Foundation , Girard College, and The School District of Philadelphia, for shining a light and partnering with us on this critical program.
The mental health of America’s students continues to be a priority for parents, teachers, school administrators, and healthcare professionals. But many children still face obstacles in accessing the care they need. This episode of our Making Change Happen docuseries highlights our efforts to address this issue through the IBX Foundation-funded Philadelphia school-based mental health initiative with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), piloted at Girard College. This initiative is fostering greater health equity while positively influencing the well-being of our city's students. At the center of this episode is Tyler Frisby, a recent Girard College graduate. Tyler shares how his experience with the program and connection with Isha George, LCSW, helped him navigate a challenging and traumatic time in his life. This episode also features Schehera Coleman Ph.D., Clinical Director of School-Based Mental Health Programs at CHOP, and Tony B. Watlington Sr., Ed.D. Superintendent of The School District of Philadelphia, who acknowledge this program’s value in destigmatizing mental health care and improving outcomes for students. 🏫 The Foundation is excited to announce the expansion of this program to two additional schools during the 2024-2025 year! 💫

Last week, volunteers from CHOP and Gilbane Building Company participated in Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia's first “Construction Sprint,” working alongside Habitat staff to assemble and erect framing for two homes in West Philadelphia. It’s one of many ways our employees are contributing to the community we are so proud to call home.

Last evening, we celebrated the appointment of Samantha “Sam” Audia as the first Chair of our Young Leadership Alliance (YLA)! Sam joined YLA, a group of individuals dedicated to changing the landscape of pediatric healthcare through philanthropy, as an inaugural member with her husband, Michael Garbose, in 2022. CHOP is incredibly important to her family and friends and Sam joined to directly impact the Philadelphia community and beyond. In addition to her work at CHOP, Sam serves on the Board of the Salem Health and Wellness Foundation and the Young Professionals Leadership Board of the Barnes Foundation. Sam works as a Business Development Director at Glenmede Endowment & Foundation Management, a local Outsourced Chief Investment Officer for nonprofits, foundations, and other mission-driven institutions. She is responsible for driving strategies that allow Glenmede to begin new client engagements, and create a strong foundation for long, productive relationships. Prior to joining Glenmede, Sam held various client and relationship management positions that spanned the for-profit, non-profit, and public sector.
