Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that often causes debilitating pain and life-threatening complications. Many patients with the disease make dozens of ER visits a year, and must receive regular blood transfusions. And though recent breakthroughs in gene therapy are giving patients with sickle cell new hope – and new options – accessing these therapies can be challenging. In the new episode of her podcast, Breaking Through, our President and CEO, Madeline Bell, talks to cell and gene therapy expert Dr. Stephan Grupp and pediatric hematologist Dr. Alexis Thompson about how gene therapy for sickle cell disease can transform patients’ lives. They also discuss what teams at CHOP are doing to ensure that these innovative therapies reach the children who need them most. Listen to the episode: http://ms.spr.ly/6047Y09mx. #WorldSickleCellDay

Our patient Marie had the opportunity to join our Government Affairs team and Children’s Hospital Association in Washington D.C. earlier this week for Family Advocacy Day, an annual event that raises awareness about the transformative care that children’s hospitals provide. Marie met with federal policymakers and their staff to increase awareness about sickle cell disease and ensuring access to cell and gene therapy treatments. #FAD2024 Marie, a participant in our clinical trial, underwent gene therapy to treat her sickle cell disease. Our hospital proudly helped pioneer the treatment and served as a clinical trial site that contributed to the therapy's FDA approval last year. To learn more about Marie's journey and how this groundbreaking treatment has positively impacted her life, visit: http://ms.spr.ly/6042YaZci.

Last week, our Executive Vice President and System Chief Operating Officer, Doug Hock, joined healthcare executives from across the country for a special meeting at The White House to discuss how hospitals and health systems are addressing gun violence. Doug spoke about the role primary care providers play in discussing gun safety with families and connecting children with behavioral health care as early as possible. He also provided an overview of our Center for Violence Prevention, which is finding innovative ways to address community violence, intimate partner violence, bullying in schools, gun safety and suicide. As part of our commitment to addressing the gun violence public health crisis, CHOP is also participating in Northwell Health's “It Doesn’t Kill to Ask” campaign, which focuses on normalizing conversations about gun safety. We are grateful to all of the hospitals and health systems that have joined us in this important work. Learn more about our gun safety resources: http://ms.spr.ly/6047YaDDV.
