Kate Nash reveals the story behind her hit track Foundations - and who is the real culprit in its acerbic lyrics

Kate Nash has lifted the lid on the story behind her viral track Foundations - including who some of its tongue-in-cheek lyrics are really about.

In the hit song, the popstar, 36, throws out some barbed but hilarious one-liners about growing up in London and nights out at the pub.

Foundations was the star's breakthrough single and was first released in 2007, but has since made a huge comeback with Gen-Z after it gained popularity on TikTok

Now, speaking to The Standard, Kate has revealed what inspired some of the song's iconic lines.

Referencing a night out, the hitmaker sings: 'You've gone and got sick on my trainers / I only got these yesterday / Oh my gosh, I cannot be bothered with this.'

However, it turns out the real culprit Kate was talking about, who had one too many drinks on a night out, was actually herself.

'I threw up on my mate Phil's brother's trainers in an alleyway,' she told the outlet.

And of course, the song's best-known lyric is when Kate sings: 'You said I must eat so many lemons / 'Cause I am so bitter / I said, 'I'd rather be with your friends, mate / 'Cause they are much fitter''.

Explaining what inspired the barbed lines, the singer said: 'As a woman you get so many insults if a guy is talking to you, and then you won't go home with him.

'We've all had them: "Suddenly you don't want to s**g me, so you're an ugly lesbian sl*t!" Wait what!? I don't think so! It was about those drunken arguments, and the stupid s*** you say to each other in the youthful, hedonistic relationships you probably shouldn't be in.'

The admission comes just after Kate made her return to music with her new album 9 Sad Symphonies, which was released on June 21.

It's the first album the Foundations hitmaker has put out in six years - and the release came five days before her performance on the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury Festival this weekend.

In 2018, Kate parted ways with her initial record label and independently released her third and fourth records.

The latest single from her new album, Millions Of Heartbreaks, captured the hearts of her fans, who fell in love with the track, similar to when she first hit the big time.

During a break from music, she made a name for herself in America.

Kate appeared opposite Alison Brie in the comedy-drama series Glow, which hit flick about women's professional wrestling circuit.

She will be taking to the stage during Glastonbury Festival where is believed to be performing some iconic hits as well some of her new album.

The exciting new album release also comes just after the songstress reportedly got 'secretly engaged' to her long-term boyfriend Thomas Silverman.

Kate is said to have found her happy ending as she is planning to tie the knot by the end of the year, according to The Sun.

A source told the publication: 'Kate and Tom are engaged and are planning to get married later this year.

'They couldn't be happier and are such a lovely couple. They have been quietly dating for several years and actually met when they were at school.'

The pair live together in their LA home alongside their two rescue dogs Vlad and Stella.
