'That's sort of the moment where your relationship with your makeup artist changes and you become best friends'.

Nicola, who plays Penelope Fetherington, added: 'It's like when they talk about people who have been to war together, I feel like Luke and I look at each other and are like "we've seen some s*** man".

Nicola also revealed that she had 'two wigs for the sex scenes because it would get too messed up' while filming.

The duo famously have a steamy scene in a carriage which the pair revealed it took an 'entire day' to film.

Luke said: 'The main bit in the carriage it was filmed in a studio so it was safe and no one could see us but we were probably locked in that carriage for an entire day.'

Nicola added: 'We were definitely and there were a lot of men outside shaking it because we weren't going anywhere it was just a box so it was a bunch of dudes rocking it.'

During the second half of Bridgerton series three Nicola and Luke threw themselves into sex scenes as they characters Colin and Penelope's love story unfolded.

Penelope and Colin's sex scene comes in episode five of the series as fans went wild for the racy romp.

In the six-minute explicit scene, Penelope was being comforted by Luke after a row with her mother about her engagement, during which time they began kissing.

Luke then began to grope his fiancée before undoing her corset and admiring her naked figure.

The pair then moved to the chaise longue where Luke's bare bottom was displayed before they touched each other intimately.

They checked in on each other constantly, with Penelope stating: 'tell me what to do', with Luke offering: 'you could touch me.'

After warning his virginal bride that this 'may hurt' the pair then had sex, with Penelope asking at the end 'can we do it again?' to which Colin quipped: 'give me 5 minutes, maybe 10.'

The racy scene lasted a total of six minutes - which was the combined length of all the steamy moments in part one.

Penelope and Colin's passion appears to dry up after Colin discovers Penelope is the gossiping Lady Whistledown.

Struggling to come to terms with the deceit, Colin does not know if he can possibly forgive her, especially after she wrote such distasteful things about both him and his sister Eloise.

Meeting Penelope on the street late at night, the pair engage in a heated exchange as Colin accuses her of being foolish for living this double life.

Yet as Penelope exclaims: 'I love you' their anger quickly gives way to passion once again and the pair engage in a steamy kiss against the wall.

But the pair are interrupted by a passing carriage and Penelope heads home, in preparation for tomorrow's wedding.

After a rollercoaster of a series and a rocky start to the couple's marriage as they continue to be plagued by the secret of Lady Whistledown, Penelope and Colin finally enjoy married bliss.

In one of the final scenes from episode eight, the pair are seen in bed together as Penelope sits on top of her husband.

While Lady Whistledown (Julie Walters) gives her final narration of the series, the pair become intimate as they gasp in pleasure.

The critics' views on Bridgerton series three part two

Evening Standard

Rating:

Vicky Jessop: 'Steamy this is not. Watching it feels like seeing two teenagers fumbling their way through an awkward clinch. Is Bridgerton losing its touch? Francesca’s love affair with Lord John Stirling is snooze-worthy – all those painful silences! Yes, we get it, they’re shy!'

The Telegraph

Rating:

Anita Singh: 'Aside from Penelope's heaving bosom, though, this third series remains a dud. Her extensive sex scene with Colin has a cringe-making quality – think EL James’ Fifty Shades with all of the terrible dialogue but none of the nipple clamps. Away from the main couple, the plot barely exists.'

The Independent

Rating:

Kate Rosseinsky: 'The wheels are starting to come off the Bridgerton carriage – and the final two episodes will need to be pretty dramatic to get things back on track.'

The Daily Mail

Rating:

Christopher Stevens: 'Stars Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton have been promising for weeks that this time, in two newly released episodes, Bridgerton goes all the way. And they weren't fibbing... though, for such an explicit sex scene, it was also oddly chaste.'

The Times

Rating:

Carol Midgley: 'I call Bridgerton the "toffs, t**s and titles" show, but here another t-word is at play — tenderness. Coughlan's aforementioned breasts should get some kind of award for all the heaving they do. Good lord, they’re up and down in those frocks like a pair of airbags.'

Variety

Aramide Timudu: 'The primary sex scene between Polin involving a full-length mirror and a chaise lounge is one of the sexiest things seen on television since Bridgerton Season 1. Fans may still gripe at the lack of sensual activity on screen, but this mirror section is absolutely intoxicating and beautifully done.'
