MATCH REPORT: Georgia stun Ronaldo and Co

The talk in the Georgian press on Wednesday was all about which of their players would get Cristiano Ronaldo’s shirt when the full-time whistle went in Gelsenkirchen.

For Khvicha Kravatskhelia, who spoke pre-match about his lifelong dream of playing against Ronaldo, the intention was clear.

‘Dreams come true,’ he said, as he talked about his desire to get Ronaldo’s shirt.

Yet by the time the whistle went here, a different kind of dream came true as Kvaratskhelia and Georgia pulled off the mother of all shocks to qualify for the last-16.

MATCH REPORT: 10-man Czechs are knocked out

The A1 autobahn is the longest national motorway in Europe. On Wednesday, much of it seemed to be clogged with cars carrying Turkey fans to Hamburg, flags draped on the bonnets of Mercedes, flying from windows, and fans crowding the service stations.

They packed into the Volksparkstadion on the edge of the city and, together with a Czechia contingent who know how to make noise of their own, they turned the final group game of this European Championship into a riot of passion and colour and drama and tension and an epidemic of yellow cards.

There were 15 in all, a record for this tournament. In fact, there may have been more. It was hard to keep count. The match ended with Hungarian referee Istvan Kovacs showing them to practically every player on the pitch and some who had already been substituted and had come running back on.

Martinez praises Georgia goalkeeper's performance

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez in his post match press conference has said;

It's a defeat. We started with low intensity, we conceded early and that's what Georgia needed.
We weren't clear-headed enough with the last pass and in front of goal, and their goalkeeper had an amazing performance.
We tried to score but couldn't, and that made Georgia believe all the more. They deserved to win.
21:42

The road to Berlin

So for England is they are to reach the final it is Slovakia in the round of 16, Italy or Switzerland in the quarter-finals and then one of Romania, Netherlands, Austria or Turkey in the semi-finals.

On the other side of the draw, we could have Spain vs Germany and Portugal vs France in the quarter-finals which could be a tasty set of fixtures.

21:37

How much is this man's price tag now?

No surprise that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia claimed the Man of the Match award after his stunning performance and goal against Portugal.

There has been talk that he has agreed a move which would see him join Paris Saint-Germain from Napoli.

But after his display today, Napoli would have every right to increase his transfer valuation even further.

Roy Keane disagrees with penalty decision against Portugal

Georgia made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after a foul by Antonio Silva.

Safe to say though that Keane doesn't believe that Georgia should have received the penalty.

He said;

Lucky? Don't get me started, we need a rematch!
I don't see that as a penalty, a little bit of contact and I am not happy with it.
It was a lovely penalty though.
21:26

Postecoglou: England must capitalise on this opportunity

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is doing punditry for ITV Sport and he says England must make the most out of falling on the right side of the draw.

He said;

You saw tonight, you can have whatever plan you like if the opposition scores within 90 minutes, that plan needs to be adjusted.
England have earned the right. They finished first and now it is about capitalising on the opportunity they have.
21:25

Georgia only finished fourth in qualifying

Georgia finished fourth in a group consisting of Spain, Scotland, Norway and Cyrprus.

In that time they lost 7-1 to their next opponents Spain and twice to Scotland.

Erling Haaland's Norway finished ahead of them without even qualifying for Euro 2024, as Georgia made it through the Nations League.

Not many would have seen them reaching the last-16.

Greatest night in Georgia's history

21:19

Favourable last-16 clash for England

England will face Slovakia in the last-16 at Euro 2024 after the group stage of the tournament concluded on Wednesday night.

Heading into Wednesday's fixtures, England looked likely to face the Netherlands, but Georgia's shock 2-0 win against Portugal ensured that the Three Lions would take on the third-placed team in Group E instead.

That will be Slovakia, after they secured a 1-1 draw against Romania earlier in the day to book their place in the knockout stages.

21:15

The third-placed teams that failed to qualify

Croatia are perhaps the big-name exit at the group stage of Euro 2024.

That late equaliser from Italy means they go out with just two points.

Hungary go out despite finishing level on points despite taking the same number of points as Slovenia.

Slovenia's goal difference of 0 compared to Hungary's -3 made all the difference.

21:12

Turkey also delighted after qualification

There was wild celebrations too in Hamburg after Cenk Tosun's late winner for Turkey against 10-man Czechia.

A goal for Czechia would have sent Turkey out of the competition and you could tell the relief on their faces after a hard-fought contest.

Czechia meanwhile were furious at full time and the player who received the red card after the final whistle was Tomas Chory.

Tomas Soucek who scored Czechia's equaliser also got a yellow card during the post-match row.

England play Slovakia in the last-16

What Georgia's win does is ensure England a clash against Slovakia instead of the Netherlands.

The Three Lions will play them in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

England have ended up on the right side of the draw and wouldn't be able to play Spain, Germany, Portugal or France until the final.

FULL-TIME - Czechia 1-2 Turkey

Different scenes at full-time as one fan runs onto the pitch and there are words exhanged between both sets of players.

There's ugly scenes and a red card is shown in there and a couple of yellows.

20:54

FULL-TIME - Georgia 2-0 Portugal

What a night for Georgia!

The biggest night of their footballing history and they've well and truly delivered and made the last-16 of Euro 2024.

There are wild celebrations at the Georgian end, disappointment for Portugal but they were already guaranteed top spot.

20:53

Goal:Czechia 1-2 Turkey (Tosun 90+4)

And that's all she wrote for Czechia at Euro 2024 as Cenk Tosun once of Everton and Crystal Palace puts the ball in the back of the net.

20:51

Georgia 2-0 Portugal

Huge chance for Nelson Semedo who is found at the far post but Mamardsashvili sticks out a hand and one of his defenders clears the ball.

Conceicao then fires a shot which Jota tries to get on the end of it but can't quite reach the ball!

They just won't score

20:49

Stoppage time

Four minutes of stoppage time in Georgia vs Portugal and six in the clash with Czechia and Turkey.

20:48, 87'

Czechia 1-1 Turkey

The Czech Republic have three minutes plus stoppage left to score a goal - but it's Turkey on the ball at the moment dominating possession as we enter the final stages.

20:45, 85'

Georgia 2-0 Portugal

Portugal running out of ideas as Ruben Neves puts in a dreadful cross which goes miles over the bar.

Czechia are attempting to pile on the pressure in the other game but their substitutes are getting very annoyed with keeper Vítezslav Jaros and Lukas Cerv both booked.

20:40, 80'

Kvaratskhelia comes off

Portugal keeping a lot of the ball. A goal any time soon and they will fancy their chances of making a dramatic comeback win.

Diogo Jota has had plenty of touches since coming on, could he be the man to turn things around.

Meanwhile the main man for Georgia comes off, as Kvaratskhelia comes off with 10 minutes to go.

20:36

Chaotic Czech equaliser

20:35

Mikautadze joins elite list

Georges Mikautadze is the ninth player to score in all three group matches of a single Euro tournament - after Michel Platini 1984, Alan Shearer 1996, Hristo Stoichkov 1996, Savo Milosevic 2000, Milan Baros 2004, Ruud van Nistelrooy 2004, Gareth Bale 2016 and Cristiano Ronaldo 2021.

20:35

Changes for Turkey and Czechia

Turkey bring on former Everton striker Cenk Tosun and Kerem Akturkoglu, who scored against Georgia. Arda Guler is among the players replaced. The Czechs send on Ondrej Lingr.

20:34

Diogo Jota comes on

Diogo Jota who has been struggling with fitness issues during the Euros comes on for Pedro Neto.

Matheus Nunes also set to come on for Joao Neves.

20:31, 72'

Georgia 2-0 Portugal

Georgia launch a brilliant counter-attack and Chakvetadze bursts through showing excellent speed but he can't hit the target.

Could have been 3-0!

20:28

Goal stands!

The goal stands for Czechia who are back in this game!

The check was for whether the goalkeeper had been fouled.

Turkey's bench clearly feel there was a foul and two people are shown a yellow card.

Turkey need just a point to qualify, Czechia need a win - but remember, they are a man down.

20:25

Goal:Czechia 1-1 Turkey (Soucek (66)

Chaos in the Turkey box as their goalkeeper fails to get the ball over the back of a Czech player and the balls bounces around before Tomas Soucek powers the ball home.

But could it be disallowed?

20:25

Ronaldo off and he's not happy

Kvaratskhelia is having an incredible game and he ducks and dives between a host of Portugal players before he is taken down.

Cristiano Ronaldo meanwhile is off and he is replaced by Goncalo Ramos.

A water bottle feels his frustration as he walks off, while Nelson Semedo replaces the struggling Antonio Silva.

20:22

Czechia 0-1 Turkey

Czechia have made a number of changes since going behind but Turkey look very comfortable.

It would require a near-miracle for Czechia to avoid elimination.

20:20

Table as things stand

  1. Portugal - 6 points
  2. Turkey - 6 points
  3. Georgia - 4 points
  4. Czechia - 1 point

Georgia 2-0 Portugal

Ronaldo is getting tugged in the box and he goes down he wants a penalty but again doesn't get anything.

It would have been harsh.

Georgia on the counter attack and Kvaratskhelia tries to take on three players at once but plays his way into trouble.

Calhanoglu's rocket for Turkey

20:15

Goal:Georgia 2-0 Portugal (Mikautadze 57)

He rolls the ball into the bottom corner and Costa dives the right way but the penalty was out of reach.

Incredible scenes in the Georgian end, they have taken another step towards the biggest win in their history.

First player of the tournament onto three goals and Antonio Silva who made the mistake for the first goal, is having a shocker of a night by giving away that penalty.

20:14

Penalty given!!

Antonio Silva is having a disaster of a game as he gives away a penalty for a challenge on Lochoshvili.

20:13

Penalty check

Georgia could be about to get a penalty here...

20:11

Goal:Czechia 0-1 Turkey (Calhanoglu 50)

Turkey take the lead as they finally take advantage of the extra man.

The ball falls to their captain Calhanoglu who slots the ball past the Czech goalkeeper.

20:09, 51'

It should be 2-0!

Oh what a chance that is for Georgia to take a 2-0 lead!

Georgia attack down Portugal's right flank and the ball is crossed into the box.

All it requires is a sidefoot from Kvaratskhelia but he does not make good contact at all and the Portugal goalkeeper collects the ball easily.

How much could Georgia rue that moment?

20:06, 47'

Strong start for Portugal

Early chance for Portugal as Ronaldo finds Conceicao who works the ball onto his stronger left foot and his shot is deflected over the bar for a corner.

Ruben Neves is straight into action as he takes the corner kick and there is a wild pinball between two Georgian players and the ball finds Ronaldo whose shot is deflected over the crossbar!

The resulting corner is then sent behind by a Portugal player as the ball again bounces around.

Real opportunity for Portugal!

20:04

Second-half back underway

Georgia get us going for the second-half, what a 45 minutes this is for them, they are one half away from making history - only if they can somehow hold out a very talented Portugal side.

Turkey also get us back going in their clash with Czechia.

20:02

Change for Portugal

Ruben Neves is coming on for Joao Palhinha as Roberto Martinez looks to turn things around.

19:52

Who England will face as things stand

As things stand England will play Slovakia in the last-16, rather than the Netherlands.

Spain would face Georgia, Portugal would go up against Slovenia and the Netherlands would take on Romania.

Still a long way to go however!

19:49

HALF-TIME - Czechia 0-0 Turkey

And it's half-time too in the second game of the group as Turkey are being frustrated by a 10-man Czechia, who to their credit have had their chances too since going a man down.

19:48

HALF-TIME - Georgia 1-0 Portugal

Ronaldo is still kicking off as the half-time whistle goes. He needs to be careful on a yellow card he can't afford another booking - something Roberto Martinez might need to think about.

19:46

Czechia 0-0 Turkey

Big chance for the ten-men of Czechia as David Jurasek bursts into the box and forces a save from Mert Gunok.

They are still playing well despite being a man down.

19:45, 45'

Pedro Neto booked for diving

Good decision by the referee here as Pedro Neto initiates contact and goes to ground just outside the box and gets a yellow for diving.

It came just moments after some delightful bit of skill from Joao Felix.

In the other game Turkey captain Hakan Calhanoglu drives a shot over the bar from outside the box.

19:39

Schick not starting but he gets booked

Schick came off last time around with an injury and he is on the bench tonight but he gets a booking before he can even come on for dissent.

Turkey's Yildiz also gets a booking for a foul and moments later he could get a second for catching Coufal with an elbow - he might be lucky to still be on the pitch.

19:37, 36'

Huge chance for Georgia

It's a brilliant cross from the free-kick by Kvaratskhelia and it's headed marginally wide!

19:36, 35'

Georgia 1-0 Portugal

Good football around for Portugal with a really cute ball from Paulinha to Ronaldo but Georgia make a vital block to stop the shot.

Georgia look to break on the counter attack and it's a brilliant run from the man given the nickname 'Kvaradona' and Dalot has to take him down.

A chance here for the underdogs to double their lead with a free-kick.

Sagnol somehow keeps his composure

19:33, 32'

Czechia 0-0 Turkey

It was a pretty even game between Czechia and Turkey before Barak was sent off.

That red card has changted the flow of the game and it is all Turkey.

Though Salih Ozcan gets booked for Turkey after pulling an opponent's shirt.

19:31, 30'

Georgia 1-0 Portugal

Joao Felix comes agonisingly close with a beautiful strike from just outside the box.

He has Georgia keeper Mamardashvili thinking as he dives low but fortunately sees the ball go just wide.

19:29, 29'

Ronaldo gets a yellow card

Chances in both games as Arda Guler goes for a spectacular overhead kick from a cross which is deflected wide. Another player then heads wide.

Conceicao then hits the side netting for Portugal against Georgia.

Ronaldo is not happy with his shirt being pulled from a corner and he is FUMING!

And he gets a yellow card for his troubles as he waves his arms around in frustration as he felt as though he should have had a penalty.

19:27, 25'

Georgia 1-0 Portugal

Georgia have dropped so deep after scoring that shock goal now 20 plus minutes ago.

Portugal with so much possession of the ball but it will be a game they need to be patient.

19:23, 21'

RED CARD: Barak (Czechia)

Antonin Barak gets a second booking and he's off!

Lunging for the ball, ends up with studs on the top of a Turkish foot.

Silly decision from the Czech player as he's booked after his earlier yellow card for pulling an opponent's shirt, which means he's gone.

19:21, 20'

Ronaldo not happy with his team-mate

Portugal winning plenty of free-kicks as this time for a silly challenge on Conceicao.

Ronaldo is not on this one, it's a glorious opportunity for them to whip the ball in.

Joao Felix on the ball and it's whipped into a dangerous spot and Ronaldo can't believe it as Antonio Silva gets in his way and his team-mate puts the ball behind.

19:19, 18'

Huge chance for Czechia!

Robin Hranac - who scored an own goal against Portugal - heads over from about six yards out. What a massive opportunity that was for them to take a shock lead much like Georgia.

19:18

Dream start for Georgia

It was a horrible mistake by Antonio Silva but what a finish.

19:17, 17'

Ronaldo with a free-kick opportunity

Portugal with a chance for the first direct free-kick goal of the tournament and it is Cristiano Ronaldo who steps up and does his trademark step back - it is some way out but he wants a goal.

19:15, 15'

Georgia 1-0 Portugal

Georgia have been a very entertaining watch so far and finding some space on the counter attack.

Kochorashvili wastes a cross though which goes nowhere near his team-mates.

In the other game Arda Guler lets rip from 25 yards out but his effort goes wide - not quite his second screamer of a goal for this tournament.

19:12, 11'

Georgia 1-0 Portugal

Conceicao looks to be in some pain as he goes down under the challenge from a Georgian player.

It has been a frustrating start for Portugal so far and Kvaratskhelia has been on some dangerous runs.

Meanwhile in the other game there is a yellow card for Barak who stops a Turkish attack.

As things stand

  1. Portugal - 6 points
  2. Turkey - 4 points
  3. Georgia - 4 points
  4. Czechia - 2 points

Georgia would qualify with this result but there is a long way to go.

19:02

Goal:Georgia 1-0 Portugal (Kvaratskhelia (2)

What a start!

Antonio Silva has a nightmare here he doesn't look where he passes and the Napoli man bursts forward and it's a beautiful finish. Diogo Costa stood no chance.

50 not out for Ronaldo

Tonight mark's the goalscoring behemoth's 50th game at a major tournament, a figure which has left the ITV panel largely awestruck as they discussed CR& in their build-up.

Roy Keane, in particular, paid tribute to his longevity:

It's quite incredible when we're talking about 50 games in major tournaments. Playing 50 games for your country is more than a hell of an accomplishment. I think he's earned that right (to play tonight). It's a big part of managing this team is managing Cristiano and Roberto Martinez knows that and that's what he's trying to do.

18:40

Early harmony before things get going in Gelsenkirchen

Things might not be so harmonious if Portugal are responsible for dumping the debutants out of the competition in roughly two hours time, however.

18:35

Martinez warns off copycat pitch invaders

Ronaldo fans may have more opportunity to try and catch their icon on the pitch than they might have assumed, but they absolutely shouldn't try and manhandle him in person, Martinez said before kick-off.

Four made it onto the pitch after the side's clash with Turkey, but the Portugal head coach stressed that it was a 'dangerous' decision for supporters to make:

He’s a very experienced player, he’s been with the team for over 20 years. He knows the kind of support fans provide, but not just Portugal fans, football fans.
I hope there won’t be any pitch invasions. This is dangerous and it’s not good for football, it’s not a part of the game that we want to see.

Another home tie for Turkey

Czechia have no easy task in Hamburg, with Turkey once again feeling the benefit of home-match conditions in Germany thanks to a vocal and impassioned diaspora settled across the country.

By the looks of things, the city is painted red and white.

EIGHT changes for Portugal - but Ronaldo starts

Martinez has shaken things up with little for his side to lose at the summit of Group F, but some things are perennial.

Among those to step in are Diogo Dalot and Pedro Neto, while Pepe - despite my gradiose predictions - starts on the bench.

Four changes for Georgia as they prepare for the must-win mountain-to-climb. Hopes that Mamardashvili between the sticks is as bullet-proof as he was against Czechia abound.

Third match, third kit

With the curtain coming down on the group stages, it's time for certain teams to fulfil their contractual obligations and show off their flashier third kits.

Portugal's is a beauty, and artistically inspired by the country's 'azulejo tiles', paying tribute to their rich cultural heritage.

Or so says the copy.

Roberto Martinez pays tribute to Portugal's superstar veteran - no, the other one

The oldest player at a European Championship when he took to the field against Czechia, Pepe is a shoo-in to start again in Portugal's final group stage game, and Roberto Martinez was singing his praises after their second tie with Turkey earlier this week.

For a neutral watching the game and seeing Pepe playing, you would never believe that he is 41 years old.
He is an example, a professional. The way he reads the game, the way he competes, he is a wonderful example for Portuguese football and for football in general.

Good evening!

Hello and welcome to Mail Sport’s live coverage as we wave goodbye the group stage with our final two clashes – Czechia versus Turkey, and Georgia versus Portugal.

The Cristiano Ronaldo-led side might be the runaway leaders at the top of the group, but things get a little more interesting below the Portuguese behemoths. Turkey sit in the qualifying spot as things stand, but a command performance from Czechia could knock them down a peg. Major tournament debutants Georgia may look unlikely to continue their journey in Germany, but will hope they can go out with a bang.

Kick-offs in Hamburg and Gelsenkirchen will be at – you guessed it – 8pm, but before then, we’ll bring you all the build-up, team news, and more.
