Germany v Scotland - Euro 2024 team news: Scott McTominay and Andy Robertson start for Steve Clarke's side in tournament opener... with Bayer Leverkusen Bundesliga champion Florian Wirtz featuring for the hosts

Manchester United's Scott McTominay and Liverpool's Andy Robertson both start for Scotland in their Euro 2024 opening match against home nation Germany in Munich. 

The Reds defender had previously played down injury fears after coming off early during a training session earlier this week, but takes up the armband on Friday evening. 

Both McTominay and Ryan Christie - also named to the starting side - will earn their 50th caps this evening, but one noted omission from the first XI is Brighton's Billy Gilmour, who has been impressing on international duty.  

Germany are fielding a fearsome-looking side with few surprises for their opener, featuring Real Madrid's Champions League winners Antonio Rudiger and Toni Kroos, Arsenal's Kai Havertz, and former Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan. 

Fresh from winning the domestic double as part of Bayer Leverkusen's inspired season, Florian Wirtz also starts for Germany.

In the build-up to Friday night's fixture, Ian Wright dubbed Wirtz 'arguably one of the best number 10s in Europe' on ITV's pre-match coverage.  

The Tartan Army will begin their European Championship journey against the hosts in what could prove the toughest test in their Group A, which also includes Hungary and Switzerland.

But despite having a mountain to climb for their tournament curtain-raiser, Steve Clarke's side enjoyed a near-perfect qualifying campaign to finish runners-up in their group ahead of this summer's competition. 

Since claiming a spot in Germany, however, things have been a little stickier, with the side winless in their last seven matches ahead of the start of the competition.

But midfielder Gilmour was bullish about Scotland's chances if the side were able to sink their teeth into the opening clash, particularly if they could successfully subdue starman Kroos. 

‘I think that will be the aim for us,’ Gilmour said on Thursday evening. ‘When we have the ball, they can’t score. 

‘So it’s probably the best thing for us to do. We will go out there versus Germany and give it our all and, hopefully, try to win the game.’

Ahead of Friday evening's tie, Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann suggested that he wasn't entirely settled, despite going in as the home favourites.

'When I look into the players' eyes, I can see they want a home win in our first game,' Nagelsmann shared. 'I'm really looking forward to it. It's a very nice feeling.

'I'm a little nervous myself. It's a big tournament. It's a special moment to be able to lead the team and lead the country.

'Scotland are a very good team with a lot of flair. They play a lot of crosses and are very dangerous. Their players give everything and throw themselves into every challenge – that's the Scottish mentality.'
