Located on a 30-acre site on The University of Texas at Austin campus, the LBJ Presidential Library is one of 14 presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration.

At the library, visitors will experience the life and times of Lyndon B. Johnson, one of our nation's most fascinating presidents, and the era of his administration—the turbulent 1960s.

ARCHIVES & MUSEUM COLLECTION
The library houses more than 45 million pages, an extensive audiovisual collection, including more than 650,000 photos and 5,000 hours of recordings, and approximately 55,000 artifacts donated by the President and Mrs. Johnson, their family, friends, and the American people.

The LBJ Library is open daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with last admission at 4:40 p.m. We are closed for three holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.

The LBJ Presidential Library is located on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin, just off I-35. View on Google Maps.

Partial Red River Street Closure
As of early December 2019, Red River Street, from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Clyde Littlefield Drive, is closed. While direct access to the library has not been affected, we recommend accessing Red River Street coming from either Manor Road, located south of the library, or from Dean Keeton Street, located north of the library.

Parking

Parking for the LBJ Presidential Library is always free in our designated visitor parking lot #38. Located directly off Red River Street, look for brightly colored library banners at the lot entrance.

Please be advised:
1) There are several University of Texas permit-only parking lots next to our guest parking, and parking in those permit-only lots may result in fines.

2) If you are a UT Austin student, staff, or faculty member with a UT parking permit that is not registered to lot #38, you may be subject to fines if you park in our visitor lot as it is not your designated lot for your permit. The library is not responsible for any citations and related fines as the parking lots are managed by UT Parking and Transportation Services.

Large vehicles
If your vehicle takes up more than one parking space, please pick up a permit at the admissions desk in the library lobby on the day of your visit. For more information, contact our Volunteer and Visitor Services office at [email protected].

Buses
We ask that all buses park in the upper southeast corner area of visitor lot #38. Passenger drop-off and pick up is by the breezeway curb in lot #38. You must also display a bus parking permit while parked. Please pick up a permit at the admissions desk in the library lobby on the day of your visit. Directions

The LBJ Library is situated on The University of Texas at Austin campus. When you enter through the library's main entrance, you will be starting on the third floor as there are two floors below ground level.

From Parking Lot #38
The library is located west of Sid Richardson Hall, which houses the LBJ School of Public Affairs. Walk through the open breezeway and across the plaza to reach the library.

From UT Austin Campus
From campus, the library is located east of Robert Dedman Drive and south of E. Dean Keeton Street. The building is behind the LBJ School of Public Affairs to the west.

From I-35

• From northbound I-35, just past the 15th Street exit, move to either of the left 2 lanes to take the lower deck.
• From southbound I-35, just past the 51st Street exit, move to either of the left 2 lanes to take the lower deck.
• Take the Manor Road Exit (exit 235B).
• Go west on Manor Road towards The University of Texas at Austin campus.
• At the first light, Red River, turn right (north).
• At the bottom of the hill, turn left into the LBJ Visitors' Parking lot—Lot #38. The entrance is flanked by banners for the library. Parking in adjacent UT-permit-only parking lots may result in fines.
• The LBJ Library is located on the other side of Sid Richardson Hall, which houses the LBJ School of Public Affairs; walk through the open breezeway to reach the LBJ plaza and the library.

Group Tours

Effective Friday, March 13 at 5 p.m. CDT, the LBJ Library is closed to the public until further notice. Additionally, we have halted tour requests at this time. Learn more.

Before making any reservations, we highly suggest reading through the information below.

Student Groups

• Type of tours and availability: School groups may choose a self-guided or guided tour. Either is available free of charge to school groups, including students and school staff, on weekdays with advance reservations. Guided tours are only available September through May.
• Group size: Due to limited space in our exhibitions and time restraints, tours cannot be provided to groups smaller than 15 or larger than 60 (this includes 60 students plus chaperones) at a time.
• When to reserve: If you would like a guided tour, we ask that you make your reservation at least six weeks in advance. If you would like a self-guided tour, we ask that you make your reservation at least three weeks in advance. We are unable to accommodate tour reservations outside of those advance notices.
• Start times and tour lengths: Start times for tours must be between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. School tours generally last 90 minutes.
• Student supervision: One adult, 18 or older, is required per 8 students.
• Groups should review our Group Visit Packet prior to arriving at the Library.

Bus scholarships. Made possible through the generous support of our Amplify Austin donors, we are also now offering bus scholarships to economically disadvantaged Pre-K-12 grade schools through the 2019-2020 school year. Transportation costs up to $250 will be reimbursed. Apply today!

Adult Groups

• Type of tours and availability: We do not offer guided tours to adult groups as our exhibitions lend themselves well to self-guided tours for adults.
• Group size: Due to limited space in our exhibitions and time restraints, tours cannot be provided to groups smaller than 15 or larger than 60 at a time. 
• When to reserve: For a self-guided tour, we ask that you make your reservation at least three weeks in advance. We are unable to accommodate tour reservations with less than a three-week advance notice.
• Cost: Special group rates of $7 per adult and $5 per senior are available with your advance reservation.

Rules & Regulations

The library is a federal facility as it is part of the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). To protect its holdings, staff, and buildings, NARA facilities abide by the following measures:

• Firearms and other dangerous weapons are prohibited in the building. It is a violation of federal law and punishment by fine and/or imprisonment to knowingly possess, cause, or attempt to introduce them in a federal facility.
• All bags are subject to inspection upon entering the building.
• All persons entering or leaving the building are subject to an inspection of their person and property.
• If requested, all persons entering must provide valid photographic identification.

Visitors should also be aware that:

• Photography is allowed, without a flash, unless otherwise noted.
• Video is allowed, without additional lighting.
• No selfie sticks are allowed in the building.
• There is no coat check or luggage storage available at the library.
• We do not allow food, drink, or smoking in the building.

Accessibility

The LBJ Presidential Library welcomes visitors from all over the world. We are committed to providing a quality experience for all.

Getting to the Library
Accessible parking spaces are available in visitor lot #38, located directly off Red River Street, with access available to a wheelchair ramp.

From the parking lot, it is approximately 250 feet across the plaza to the building entrance.

If you're coming from campus and on the Robert Dedman Drive side of the library, there are two accessible routes. You may take the path north of the library, in front of the Thompson Center, and circle south around the library and to the building entrance.

The second option is to take the path located in between the library and fountain and go through the LBJ Auditorium entrance. An elevator is available, located at the end of the hallway next to the Wasserman Media Center, which will take you to the plaza level of the LBJ School of Public Affairs. From there, go west across the plaza to the library's building entrance.

Inside the Library
Service animals on a leash and under their owner's control are welcome inside the library.

Wheelchairs are available at the admissions desk free of charge. Motorized wheelchairs are permitted.

Wheelchair-accessible restrooms, each situated next to a water fountain, are located on the second and tenth floors.

Elevators are located in our central lobby and make every exhibition easily accessible.

Lightweight, portable gallery stools are located outside of the elevators on the third and fourth floors. There are also designated seating areas throughout the exhibition spaces on the third, fourth, and tenth floors.

Video presentations are closed-captioned.

For exhibitions with audio and no video, description booklets are available at the admissions desk.

Our interactive tables, located within the exhibitions, feature certain enhancements such as adjusted screen positions and high contrast colors.

Need additional assistance? With at least two weeks notice, American Sign Language interpreters can be made available. With at least one week notice, a tour docent can be made available to escort visitors who are blind or have low vision. For more information, please contact us at [email protected].

Misc. Helpful Information for Visitors

If you're traveling to Austin, we recommend visiting the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau for excellent resources and information to help plan your trip, including flights, hotels, rental cars, and other attractions in the Austin area.

Transportation
Transportation to the LBJ Presidential Library is available from the airport by bus, taxi, or shuttle. Information regarding the Super Shuttle is available here or by calling local reservations at (512) 258-3826, or out of area reservations at (800) 258-3826. Some hotels provide a shuttle if requested in advance.

Capitol Metro (public transportation in Austin) provides limited service between UT and the downtown area and airport. One of the stops is at San Jacinto Street and 26th Street, near the LBJ Library. Route and schedule information can be found here. The bus is called the #100 Airport Flyer. It runs approximately every 30 minutes.

The Forty Acres bus line provides limited service between the library and The University of Texas at Austin campus.

What to Expect

Upon arriving at the library, each researcher will be briefed by an archivist on Reading Room procedures and relevant holdings. It is preferable to arrange an appointment time with the interviewing archivist prior to arrival. 

Reading Room Hours

The Reading Room is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Though the museum is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day, the Reading Room is always closed on weekends and federal holidays as well as on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019.
