Apply and manage license strategies on assets

Creator Music is now available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Expansion to YPP creators outside of the U.S. is pending.

Once you’ve created a license strategy, you can apply it to your licensable assets so they become available for licensing on Creator Music. If you no longer want an asset to be licensed from Creator Music, you can deactivate the asset’s license strategy.

Apply a license strategy to an asset

To add a license strategy to an asset:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. From the left menu, select Assets .
  3. Click the asset you want to add a license strategy to.
  4. On the asset’s detail page, click Monetization
  5. Click the Platform strategies tab or the Channel-based strategies tab.
  6. Click SELECT PLATFORM STRATEGY or SELECT CHANNEL-BASED STRATEGY.
  7. Search for the strategy title and select it from the list.
  8. Click APPLY.
    • Note: You may see a notice “Pricing update available for this strategy” and an EDIT button. Learn more about pricing updates.
    • If a publisher has provided a pricing floor, your license strategy must meet the minimum price set by the publisher. A license strategy is ineligible if just one channel segment’s pricing is less than the publisher’s price for that asset.

The strategy you just applied will show at the top of the list with the “Current terms” label in the Status column.

Apply a license strategy to many assets at once

The maximum number of assets you can update at once is 2500. To add a license strategy to multiple assets:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. From the left menu, select Assets .
  3. Check the box next to each asset you’d like to update.
    • To select all assets on a single page, check the box at the top.
    • To select all assets on all pages, check the box at the top and click Select all matching.
  4. Click Edit  and then Set license strategy.
    • This bulk action will set a license strategy on selected assets. The new terms will be reflected in Creator Music. Existing license acquisitions and usages associated with the asset won't be affected.
    • This action will replace any existing license strategy of the same type on selected assets.
  5. Select a license strategy from the dropdown menu and then APPLY.
    • If you select a platform-based license strategy, only the asset’s platform strategies will be updated.
  6. Click UPDATE ASSETS and confirm the number of assets in the pop-up window.
Note: If a publisher has provided a pricing floor, your license strategy must meet the minimum price set by the publisher. A license strategy is ineligible if just one channel segment’s pricing is less than the publisher’s price for that asset.

Deactivate an asset’s license strategy

If you no longer want an asset to be licensed from Creator Music, you can deactivate the asset’s license strategy. Keep in mind that any existing license acquisitions and usages associated with the asset won’t be affected.

Once an asset's license strategy is deactivated, the asset will be removed from Creator Music and creators won't be able to license the associated track anymore.

To deactivate the license strategy on an asset:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. From the left menu, select Assets .
  3. Click the asset whose license strategy you want to deactivate.
  4. On the asset’s detail page, click Monetization
  5. Click the Platform strategies tab or the Channel-based strategies tab.
  6. Click DEACTIVATE PLATFORM STRATEGY or DEACTIVATE CHANNEL-BASED STRATEGY.
  7. Read the dialog warning and click DEACTIVATE.

The strategy you just deactivated will show on top of the list with the label “Previous terms” in the Status column.

Note: License strategies can't be deleted, they can only be deactivated on assets. To deactivate a license strategy on all the assets it's applied to, follow the steps here.
