Description |
Woman's 3-piece underwear set consisting of camisole, petticoat, and drawers, all made of white cotton with crocheted lace and pink silk ribbon inserts. The petticoat is gathered into the waistband, and has an inscription in ink on the placket: "Made in / a set / 1911". The open-crotch drawers are gathered into the waist and have below-knee-length trouser legs. The camisole is waist length, with square neckline; the shoulder straps and the edging at the neckline are crocheted lace trimmed with pink ribbon inserts and bows. This 3-piece underwear set was made in 1911 by Eliza Hilah Lake (1874-1938) of Graniteville, Staten Island. The set was found with a Richmond County Fair tag for "Set Underwear" in the Womens Department, 1912, awarded to Miss E.H. Lake. Miss Lake was a local historian and photographer. She belonged to the Huguenot Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and other organizations. She was the daughter of photographer John E. Lake and Mary L. Gledhill Lake. |
