Wiki Loves Mato Grosso
By
Wiki Loves Mato Grosso is an initiative organized by Wiki Movimento Brasil (WMB), with support from the Wikimedia Foundation. It aims to highlight Mato Grosso's cultural, historical, and natural heritage on Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia in Portuguese. In 2024, Wiki Movimento Brasil (WMB) will mobilize volunteer editors, institutional partners and Mato Grosso communities to improve coverage of Mato Grosso on the free internet!
Mato Grosso is the third largest state of Brazil. It is part of the Center-West region and it contains 142 municipalities. In its capital Cuiabá is located the Geodesic Center of South America. Its territory is covered by three types of biomes: Amazon, Pantanal and Cerrado. This State where four big rivers meet (Paraguay, Xingu, Cuiabá and Araguaia) offers amazing fauna and flora, being known as the Brazilian safari. And what to say about Chapada dos Guimarães National Park and its rugged terrain with dramatic cliffs and waterfalls?
The Tropical climate of the State, with hot weather all the year (temperatures go up to 109°F), coexists with a rich cultural diversity built by Pantanal's riverine, quilombola and indigenous peoples; expressed in arts, mythology, dances (such as lambadão cuiabano, siriri and cururu), and gastronomy (such as the Maria Isabel, banana farofa, chicken stew and the famous baguncinha burger - which has become intangible heritage of Cuiabá).
Despite of its importance, only 46 municipalities have one or more images on Wikimedia Commons; only 7 of the 110 assets listed by IPHAN have Wikipedia articles. Mato Grosso is definitely one of the most underrepresented Brazilian states on Wikimedia platforms. That's why Wiki Movimento Brasil will dedicate the year of 2024 to organize a series of activities to improve the quality and the quantity of information on Mato Grosso available on the Internet.

New partnerships in Bahia
In 2021, WMB carried out the first Wiki Loves State annual campaign: Wiki Loves Bahia. Its main goal was to reduce information gaps about the state of Bahia in Wikimedia projects. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, we couldn't organize a Wiki Takes a City event. So we are very happy to announce the organization of the Wiki Takes Cachoeira and São Félix event (sister-cities separated / linked by a bridge across the Paraguaçu River) and the partnerships signed for it.
Secretaria de Cultura e Turismo de Cachoeira
Arquivo Público Municipal de São Félix Dr. Júlio Ramos de Almeida (Public Municipal Archives of São Félix) and Arquivo Público Municipal de Cachoeira (Public Municipal Archives of Cachoeira) are located 70 mi from the state capital, Salvador. Their mission is to safekeep historical documents from cities' public administrations: executive, legislative and judicial branches. They also gather and keep photographic and digital collections.
See the Arquivo Público de Cachoeira's GLAM page.

Wiki Takes Cachoeira and São Félix (process n° 062.2000.2023.0002376-81 / 062.2000.2024.0000302-55) is a project approved by Paulo Gustavo Bahia Call for Proposals. So it has received financial support from the Bahia State Government through the Secretariat of Culture via the Paulo Gustavo Law, directed by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil, Federal Government. Paulo Gustavo Bahia (PGBA) was created to carry out emergency actions to support the cultural sector, with the aim of complying with Complementary Law No. 195 of July 8, 2022.

Correio da Manhã ("Morning Post") was a daily newspaper of the Brazilian metropolis Rio de Janeiro, published from 1901 to 1974. After the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état the opposition continued and led to the temporary arrest of owner Niomar Moniz Sodré (1916-2003), daughter in-law of co-founder Edmundo Bittencourt, whose husband Paulo Bittencourt deceased in 1963. Under pressure of the government, advertisers ceased to support the paper, which eventually led to its demise in 1974. >> Part of the collections of Brazilian National Archives. |
Independence or Death by Pedro Américo, oil on canvas, 1888. Displayed in the Museu Paulista.
Américo finished the painting in 1888 in Florence, Italy, 66 years after the proclamation of independence. The Brazilian imperial house commissioned the work, due to investments into the construction of the Museu do Ipiranga (presently the Museu Paulista). The goal of the artwork was to emphasize the monarchy. >> Part of the collections of Museu Paulista. |
