  1. Hi! I own a Magnavox CD-i 450 and have the DV expansion installed. I’ve been toying around with burning VideoCDs and so far have been successful in creating normal VCDs, but now I want to take it a step further and create VCDs compatible with my CD-i.

Now, I have been doing research (mostly on this forum) and learned that a CD-i application needs to be present on the VCD for it to run on the system or else the unit will have no idea what to do with the disc…and that’s all I can gather from the research, since I can't find a clear and coherent explanation as to how to properly create these discs. I have the CD-i application files (VCD on CDi 4.1.1), but have no idea how to go about putting everything together.

If anybody out there can help me, I would appreciate it very much! Thanks!

If you are building your VCDs with vcdimager, vcdeasy, cequadrat, roxio/adaptec, and a few others, it should be giving you the option of adding the CDi application file. As long as that file is added in the appropriate folder and sector, those programs should be making proper White Book bridge discs which should be readable/playable in both CDi players, and VCD players (and CDROMXA drives on computers as well, with a compatible vcd player app if it exists).

Now, some of those apps worked out the vcd structure through reverse engineering, but others did go licensing the spec, yet I doubt that most or maybe even ANY of the apps creators did much disc verification using a legit CDi system (rare as they were even then), so it is very possible there may be enough spec inaccuracies that a bridge disc created by them might NOT be truly playable on a CDi system.

But I must ask, why do you need to play it in that machine, rather than a real vcd player (or dvd player that supported vcds)?

Should've mentioned this in the first post, I am using VCDImagerGUI. It won't allow me to enable CD-i support, and I bet that's because I am not putting the files in the correct locations or there's something else I am not doing correctly. I'm gonna try the other programs you mentioned, see if I get any better results.

Also, never considered the possible fact that the application's creators didn't use an actual system to make sure the discs would work.

As for why I am doing this, sheer boredom and curiosity. Just something interesting to try out just for the hell of it. It's not like I NEED to play them on the system

Sorry I don't have easy access to my archived apps (deep storage in another country, no less), otherwise I would offer to post some files.

    Good luck.

  6. Took a break from all this VCD CD-i stuff after posting here, and just came back to it a few days ago.

I'm trying a new method, but I'm at a roadblock. I need CD burning software that will allow me to choose whether or not I can have the disc finalized or not. ImgBurn doesn't allow that sadly.

What I am trying to do is add VCD to CDI application (VCD on CDi v3.2) into the CDI directory of the VCDs. Not sure if this will work but it's worth a try. All I need is a proper CD burner that will allow me to not finalize a disc so I can add those files. If anybody knows software that can do that (preferably one where I won't have to spend so much $$$ for), I would be very grateful!

This forum so far has been a big help!

EDIT: Found a program better than what I was looking for, and now I can add the VCD to CDi files to the VCD's CDI directory like the manuals explained. I'm gonna re-read a few things on the ICDIA website and refresh my memory on which version of VCD on CDi works with which version of VideoCD. If I have anymore questions I will post them. Wish me luck!

Note: regardless of which app you author with, when you burn, for VCD and CDi, you should always burn in Disc-at-Once (DAO) mode (which does finalize)*. So the cdi app should be added during authoring, not as a 2nd/later session.

*SAO is possible also, but needs to be done right. Only certain kinds of items ought to be on a later session (e.g. pc multimedia files).
