1. A Better VCR or a TBC?

On the first video 1.avi black background orange text I see on screen jitter at 10 seconds.
I would suggest a better quality VCR like a JVC SVHS if available.
The cheapest option would be JVC HRS 7500 none TBC with ES10 or ES15.

Buying a TBC is difficult and expensive, most of the ones you see online are broken or have issues
A TBC can introduce tearing if you are dealing with 2nd 3rd 4th gen tapes.

It all depends on how serious you are on capturing if you are a perfectionist then a full frame TBC JVC SVHS VCR.
Second option would be weak TBC with ES10 or ES15.
Cheap option would be non TBC SVHS VCR connected to ES10 or ES15.

It use to be the default player on ever PC that's why people used it.

Now you have to pay extra for it to play DVD.
It can however play mpeg2 encoded files if you download the mpeg2 extension from the Microsoft store, in fact it automatically asks you to if you give it an mpeg2 file to ▶️

Ok let me rephrase that to
A general consensus

For example say I recorded something rare from the TV in 2000 watched it once and ⏪ it to the start after that I have not touched it since then it's been 24 yrs and the tape has been in s cupboard since then, a few taps are ⏺️ in LP mode willl that also have.a negative effect? Im assuming it does from what I've read online?

What if its a brand new VCR packaged in a box bought 25 years ago kept in a cool dry environments all those years and opened today just to capture tapes?

Can parts still deteriorate if they haven't been used? I can't understand why they would?
It's good to buy multiple VCRS but they are getting expensive to buy and how much is enough?
Let's you have 500 tapes to convert will 2 VCRS be enough for the job?

Then how many VHS could you capture in 1 day because I've read the the argument like USB capture cards anyone of them can literally burn out on heavy use like 6 hours, the very same could be said about any timebase corrector, I've read online about the AVT 8710 over heating and malfunctioning after 6 hours, we have a race against time but we are kind of helpless because if we capture more than 1 tape the capture card or timebase might malfunction and buying another one is very expensive and near impossible, if we delay capture the VCR parts like belts could perish over time even if stored and not used?

That means nothing can be done I thought playing them once in a while will keep them running

What if we have 2 good VCRS with minimal use?
GotMemories does fearmongring all the time so does Legacybox

We don't really know if the software will keep working, msny capture cards no longer work in windows 10 windows 11.

Hi Guys

I want to ask some questions about VHS tapes everybody please give your opinion about this because I keep reading posts online about it with no definite answer.

The question and confusion is about VHS 📼 lifespan.

How long do VHS tapes last?
Do VHS tapes lose quality over time?
Do VHS lose more quality if you play them more often or do they keep in shape if played often?
Do VHS not lose quality if you play them once back them on a blank tape and keep the original save?

1- install AviSynth
2- create a file called check.avs with notepad and write in it:

AviSource("<filename>.avi")
AssumeTFF()
separateFields()

3- open the file check.avs with VirtualDub
4- in VirtualDub use the mouse wheel to display the fields of the video in motion. If you see a consistent motion the AssumeTFF() is ok, otherwise change it to AssumeBFF(); while there you can also understand the field architecture of your video (interlaced, telecined, phase-shifted, etc.)
Yes I temporarily de-interlace in in VD, try both TFF and BFF if I get a backwards forwards motion then it's the wrong field order but I don't get that I've tried this in the past.

From my own personal experience in this if Lagrith codec is used on input file hybrid media info panel always reports as progressive BUT if HUFFYUV is used Hybrid media info panel always reports aa BFF, no matter what capture card id used to capture the file in virtualdub, I stupidly use to think, one of my other cards Avermedia EZ7 might be sending frames BFF.

I am just a newbie who likes to read these forums and comments when in need of help ot if I can contribute to the discussion so does this mean all capture cards capture in coming VHS footage as TFF? someone please clarify.

It uses media info.
Whenever Huffyuv is used as source input codec it has always reported BFF, no matter what capture card is used.

I used to think it was because the capture card was capturing BFF, I like yourself use the GV-USB2 .

I overwrite input scan and always change it to TFF because I have been told VHS is always TFF.

That's what I always thought but whenever I capture with Huff and send it to Hybrid the media info section always says bottom field first I just ignore and ask it to overwrite input scan to TFF.
I hope I am doing the correct thing by ignoring it?

I de-interlace and tell hybrid to ignore input scan and I always change it to upper field first even huffy that shows bottom field first in hybrid media info section.

Then I get shimmering on playback on the encoded file if I color correct in vegas first that's why I won't be doing that.
I don't even resize in virtualdub or vegss I resize in hybrid, I read somewhere the shimmering can happen if it has been cropped snd resized?.

At the moment I'm just going to capture stuff and then get back to all this because it all seems very complicated.

Can I save original file as YUY2 then convert to RGB using direct stream copy option?
or save YUY2 then save RGB?

Lagrith always shows as progressive it doesn't flag correctly

Huffyuv does seem to foat but always bottom field first.

So I should change VD settings to save RGB
Vegas reads both limited and full range (depending on the format).
In his case, YUV makes no sense anyway, using YUV no longer makes sense after the first filter in VD.

YUV makes sense for VHS capture , and YUV for delivery to YT/Vimeo

RGB filters are ok - but for huffyuv YUV, lagarith YUV, ut video YUV inputs - convert to RGB using standard method ONLY if the YUV levels are "legal" range first , or you're sure you have no usable data in the 0-15 and 236-255 range - otherwise you clip . It happens with standard vdub RGB conversion too

I can capture and then de-noise in VD but that would mean it would be de-noising interlaced material, Neat asks you about that, it wants you tell it if the footage is interlaced or progressive.

I could temporarily de-interlace in Yadif - bulit in to VD de-noise once neat is applied I can remove the Yadif interlace filter from the filters list, will this not have a negative effect on the overall image quality?

I think 2nd option is best
1. Capture lossless
2. Denoise in VD (neat)
3. Color correction Vegas

I understand what your saying but I'm frightened to death about downloading filters from avisynth in case I get a virus on the computer, avisynth came with hybrid so it's on the system already and so is QTGMC.

Hybrid is easy you don't really have to do much just 5 clicks, with Avisynth you have to manually write a script it doesn't have an interface like virtualdub, this is why 99% of people run away from it, the other one percent don't care or don't know about it.

I wish QTGMC was like Yadif in VD 2 clicks and the video is de-interlaced it is relatively fast as well.

Just like the source.
My order is virtuldub then de-noise with neat basic color correction in virtualdub and brightness, contrast, hsl adjustable then I have VD configured to save output as yuv2.

Take it into hybrid de-interlace resize if needed using Huffyuv codec because hybrid does not have lagrith installed it does have HuffYuv, take it into Vegas do advanced color correction then encoded that yuv file to .h264, but it seems vegas will convert my yuv2 saved video in virtuldub and I'm going to get the wrong color, brightness, white levels on the .h24 encoded by vegas.

This is how I have understood it please do correct ke if im wrong.
I can't find a way to solve this.

can lagrith be used? I was thinking important Huff from Hybrid clean up and transcode lagrith in vegas to .h264

I've set the levels using graph studio with help from Alywen nothing goes into red but scenes do change from light to dark during films, how damaging is this conversation of colorspaces? Is it visible once you transcode to near lossless compressed.h264 and upload it to a video hosting site YouTube free or Vimeo a paid service?

All editing softwares convert to RGB automatically when imported? Have I understood that correctly?
I am using basic color correction plug ins in virtualdub for basic color correction, I also have neat video for cleaning up in virtuldub which is a must on VHS, that also works in RGB then virtuldub converts RGB to YUV2.

Final file is Huff or lagrith lossless capture YUV2 4:2:2 then it goes into vegas now is where things get messy the experts and users that know what they are doing say that Vegas converts to RGB anyway.

This is what I'm going to do be doing 1vcapture in VD lossless de-noise then 2 take the file to Hybrid de-interlace (resize if needed) save as Huff, up to here it's good but then the hybrid huff generated file goes into vegas for editing, color correction it then converts to RGB and the final file is RGB

The way you have suggested seems very long winded I wanted to do it the easy way and without using any scripting.
I'm not on PC im using my phone and captures are on hard drive I will see what I can get to show you.

Take that hybrid encoded file into vegas and save it as .h264 in vegas
Will this be ok and will it save in correct colorspace?

How should it be exported in .h264 render template.
Upper field first, lower field first or progressive?

How should the project properties be set?

My only issue left is can I export from Vegas movie studio in YUY2
What are the best settings and if it does convert to RGB can I use
RGB to YUV2 colorspace conversion I think hybrid can do this if you set it to.

VD does thus if you apply any VD filter because filters work in RGB only VD does
the conversation during render as long as you have it set in the settings to YUV/2
4:2:2 in the depth option on the menu which I have.

Would premiere be a better choice to do this?
Which software csn export without changing YUY2 to RGB, I wss not even thinking about this issue and this issue has become a big problem for me now or I could just ignore the colorspace conversion and not worry about it.

Wow this is a new problem in the mix, who knew capturing VHS would be this difficult?
I've saved YUV in vegas by setting it YUV2 in vegas temple then opened it in Hybrid and the media info tab in Hybrid showing it a 4:2:2 Huff or Lagrith 8bit YUV file, is media info misreading the colorspace in Hybrid?

That means if Huff is chosen in Hybrid I will not need to set the bite it will calculate it automatically?

That's what should happen with a lossless file, it does in virtualdub, the codec setting doesn't have a set birate option, meridian (best) option is chosen automatically for best results.

Will do that

I adjusted everything and started capture when the blue histogram wave was set the middle but that give me extra brightness but if I reduce the brightness making it look natural it would go in the read zone on the left edge.

Do we know what the legal levels are in terms of numbers? I think default is ser to everything 128.
Is it bad if it goes 20 percent to the red? I was hoping it would be ok to let it go into red and adjust brightness contrast in VD bulit in filter after capture, difficult if details are going to be lost.

The levels tab is a shortcut for setting the proc amp levels itvl doesn't work with GV-USB2 it says something like no level driver available for this device, works on others.
