Anyone have suggestions on a device that can play back HEVC/AACHE video from 480p-4k
Without WiFi. I don’t want a streaming device, just a dumb reader that can handle USB3 and SD cards and output HDMI to a TV/Monitor.

I’ve ordered a Neumi Atom which has good reviews across multiple sites. But haven’t received it yet and could return it for a better option.

Well the canopus was definitely not the best solution but it's working and for what it is (a convoluted mess) it works well. I'll see about posting screens in a bit but ...
85 minute VHS -> DVM gives me a usable 9Gb file that is clean, no real jitter, doesn't bounce all over and no artefacts.

Convert to matted screen 722x490 (my standard res to fix scan and menu bar issues with phones and tablets) the 640x480 vhs source using commercial (paid for) h264 encoder and AAC-HE audio codec. at 820kbps and 96kbps audio
and trim the dropouts and some pauses and fades that don't really add anything

what I got was a file under 2 gigs that looks great at 1920x1280 on a 42 inch Samsung LCD and doesn't kill my tablet or phone to playback.

    So thanks to everyone.

so I'll be straight honest here.
my /goal/ before anything else is to salvage two shelves of late 70s and early 80s vhs and betamax tapes. all classic horror films. many are extremely low production runs and in terrible shape to begin with when they were made new. and some early underground tapings of early punk-thrash shows. all i want is to not totally loose them.
Toshiba burner deck didn't work out. too many artifacts. and crap digital striping. the settings are either too high 30min a dvd or too low 4 or 6 hour discs. my next step if all else fails is pull out the projector and record from a tripod.
I've gotten some good suggestions here and I'm gonna give what i ordered a try.
if anything works out I'll post.

Well then; thank you to everyone. I found my not so standalone solution but I think it's going to work well enough.
The Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle. Looks like this combined with some good software programs I already have can overall be the best solution. So on to conversions... once ups gets the stuff here. :)

thanks for the reply. I'll check out the Colossus.
I ordered one of those Toshiba dvd-r decks too so I'll give that a try first.
Most of these are poor quality to began with. I'm not looking for perfection at all: rather preservation. saving tapes that are demagnetizing and falling apart from age.

    perfection from vhs? blah.

I tried a few of the "newer" game capture devices. All seem to be composite video or hdmi if not direct port to port matched.
Has anyone tried some of the earlier ones?

No... dvd is far from ideal and honestly I'd like to go from VCR to File with/without a stabiliser.

I had an earlier model of one of these actually.
Sony VRDMC6 DVDirect Compact Size DVD Burner with AVCHD Recording
Think I had the old VDR-MC4 but can't swear by that.

I've looked all over this and four other dedicated sites for AV info looking into this.
I want to copy VHS and beta tapes eventually to H264.

I would prefer to simply record from VHS to some form of external media. USB/Flash etc.

That said: I've given into the probable need to burn to dvd so whatever solution needs to support RW or RAM.

Suggestions on best choices for doing this without clogging my PC?
We're talking more tapes than I'm willing to pay someone else to do.

    Greetings
I was wondering if there was a way (plugin, software, setting, iFilter) to make windows explorer show A/V codecs in the details view.

I'm looking for a column the likes of Audio Codec and Video Codec.
MediaInfo adds pop-over commands; but that's not really what I'm looking for.
I want something that will allow me, in the details list, to add those two details the same way as date; size, length... are included.

    Ideas?

    Follow the posted steps above.
MKVExtractGUI-2 worked great. Fixed my problems on MKV, MP4, OGM, and a few others, supports more formats, and even properly identified non-standard files in containers (like PNG, BMP, and even a Doom WAD file in an MP4 video about a new doom level)!.

I'm having a problem that just started happening.
When I load a video file into MKVExtract GUI 1.6.4.1
it fails to give me any options for extracting video or audio.
    It only shows "Chapters".

Can anyone help me figure out why? This happens on EVERY MKV file now, and it didn't have issues in the past. occurs on all files I've tried recently; from 40 meg to 8.9 gig.
Can't figure out what is going wrong as up until just recently it worked fine.

The only do-it-all I ever had seen that worked was the Pinnacle and even that had sync issues, not to mention FAT limitations.
I miss my little Pinnacle though.

Actually I meant monologue audio. As some VCDs have dual-mono (two languages) and some have joint-mono single language, for 'replicated' stereo.

My real reason for looking for a standalone PVR is to plug in the player, push play and record, and walk away. If that makes sense. That PVTU (link above) I had was great; but as I said it failed after a while, and the resolution was crappy to boot.

Thanks; that at least eliminates camcorders.

Is there any standalone DVR/PVR units that can bring untuned (read A/V in) video in directly from the composite (RCA) lines and record it? That's basically what I'm aiming for. I wan't to record to a drive or flash memory without the computer directly from a video feed.
Then I want to plug the box into the computer and grab the files off and copy them to my system to edit separately using my preferred software tools.
I've read that some people used Tivo and Replay units set to channel 0 or 1 to record but there's no mention of getting the files OFF the drive after that. Not to mention they're not the most reliable sources either; so I come here where the smart people go.

I am not quick to trust anything that streams real-time from a device to the computer for capture as I've read all over about sync issues that are beyond repair; frame-loss, and all sorts of other problems. Not to mention the loss of use of my computer for two to four hours.

If anyone can point me in the right direction: I'm looking for something that can capture analogue line audio/video from:
Stereo VHS, BETA, JVC VideoDisk, and
    MONO VCD
that does not use a computer at any point in the capture process.

But after recording I want to dump the created files to my computer for editing and eventually convert them to DivX/XviD DVDs.

I've read rumours that some Tivo devices can do this but I wan't to be sure before I go dumping money on more products that don't work; or paying for TV recording when I will NEVER have the device plugged into the TV feed.
I had a Pinnacle Video Transfer http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+Family/Instant+Video+Recorder.htmunit that lasted quite some time before it died out. Worked great as it saved to USB sticks that I could transfer to my PC later. The price on the unit has almost doubled now though since it's no longer made and the sync issues don't warrant a $100+ purchase.

Try aIcarus or aPatch. For a quick solution.
Rules don't let me say more.

Worst case, pass the VOB files to a single merged VOB. (SlySoft, VBrmX). Then use VOBMux to merge the current file with the new audio track. All assuming it's a correct audio track, that it's properly synced, etc.

To answer the Q about size, the question is poorly worded,.
If you mean you doubled the size:
if you're adding a DTS track it's quite posible you're adding another 4 gigs of space to the image.
If you mean the size didn't change (much):
also possible if adding some poorly coded 2-channel AAC track or the like.

The program I've used on the RARE ocasion of overburning, with near total success is ISOBuster. A damaged-disc and image recovery tool. Well worth the small price in my book, it can recover anything, burn anything, and does bit-by-bit verification, from out to in and in reverse.

    Beyond that for other software
, just set the advanced tab in Nero to allow for overburning supported media, and below that check the box that says allow burning on non-supported media.

For ImgBurn, use a totalling tool like nerodiscrescue (free) to find out the real size of the space on the disc. When burning the image, make sure you have enough space from the totalling program for the size of the image in bytes. Then check off the box when you go to burn the disc that tells you it's to big and asks if it should try anyway.

ALWAYS leave 6 kilobytes extra "real world" space for standalone DVD/CD players and audio disc players. That's the standard laser lead from what I picked up at AVS.

So I'm really late, by years, but a general update:

    1) Overburning can be done, on + and - media despite what you may read elsewhere

    2) If your burner supports overburning, your burner will probably read the overburnt disc

    3) Overburnt DVD VIDEO discs will probably play in 60-75% of standalone players, and upwards of 90% of computer drives; depending on WHO YOUR READ the numbers from. Overburnt data discs are almost always readable by computer drives

    4) Overburning is ALWAYS risky, but good software (IMGBurn, Nero, ISOBuster...) allow for a true raw data verification. If it verifies good, then you're good. Period.

Thank you; I'll give it a try. I don't care much for editing, just something that I can set to go and walk away from and let it do it on it's own. As long as the resulting MP3s are in the majority of being close to accurate in silence detection, I don't care much beyond that. Just trying to put together an MP3-CD to play later.

I was wondering if any of the Video Help Gods had any suggestions on some software I could try.
I'm looking to split recorded (legal) internet and satellite radio dumps that are currently in MP3 format at the pause-breaks. Similar to the way audio tape players can skip "tracks" by listening for gaps. Streams range from around an hour to 8 hours plus. I want to split them to single tracks per song.
    Suggestions?

I just stumbled across this old post and had to say something when I read the Clinton comment.

To put it to rest, i was just annoyed that my television at the time was constantly asking me to set up the parental controls (and no, it couldn't be turned down or off) for everything. Yet if I blocked the offensive religious material (Y and G ratings!?!?) I'd block all the nifty nature documentaries on PBS/BBC as well. At the time I thought it better to remove a "chip". I've long since switched to tuner cards and a C-Band dish.
Americans found US TV to be offensive!? hope all those people never leave the country or they'd just all die from what's on TV elsewhere. I receive East and North Asian TV from Japan and former USSR territories where topless and nudity (respectively) are common not just in film but on television and in COMMERCIALS. European KIDS shows with topless women teaching math, reading, and science in (their) early morning and mid afternoon programming.
As for the mod, probably time to close out this thread...:
    to recap
V-Chip was a chip at first and could be removed; and is now firmware and can't be removed
was implemented to ease the [term] people who [term] [term] [term] in the sky
does not block offensive religious content or the Fox Fantasy Channel blowhards
Does block learning aids and acceptable erotic entertainment

    BUT
BACK TO THE ORIGINAL POST TOPIC:
Thanks to all who posted reasonably to my question. Point is taken, I was just getting more and more pissed off at the "set function for this show" type warnings. I've since switched to non-v-chipped TV tuner cards and watch tv on a PC monitors. No more censorship.

Oh, and I use subtitles/CC regularly. Helps when watching TV when others are sleeping. =)

UDF is a disc format, like Joliet, or ISO, ....
Depending on your OS, you should be able to just place the disc in the drive and copy the files that are on it, or you may need to go to the OS's update site and download UDF disc format support.
Once you have the disc in the drive, you'll need to check what format the video is being saved in. Try MediaInfo https://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaInfo. Drag the file into the program and it will tell you what video and audio codec was used. From there, something like Super Video Converter can convert most formats. If not, post you MediaInfo output and I'll point you to a workable converter/codec pack. [/url]

MOST of the software in this guide is commercial. There may be free variants of SOME of the used programs, but not all. Everything other than the Nero HD plug-in is trialware, shareware, crippleware, nagware, et all.
NONE OF IT INCLUDES GREYWARE, SPYWARE, TROJANS ... IF YOU DOWNLOAD FROM THE SITES I LIST.

I both support and advocate free software; and also champion shareware/trialware. I believe in PAYING for what I'm using, if it's worth using. Until we're all in a utopia with no money and free everything, pay for things you use. Don't steal, don't pirate, use my (not finished) post on copyrights as a guide to what is legal.

This guide is NOT about shrinking size, rather it's for CONVERTING from source format to DVD; and then to AVI or Mobile. Once you have your DVD file; CloneDVDMobile can create the mobile format you require. For those that go straight to AVI, follow the "continue on" instructions to get to DVD, then use CloneDVDMobile.

    edDV: Many thanks, quite useful.

jman98: Thanks also. I mis-posted my intentions in that original post. I have PAL VHS and DVHS tapes and a multi-region-multi-format HVD/HDDVD/BluRay/DVD/DVHS/VHS ...... player HiMeida. I don't, however, have a PAL compatible TV. I need to pass that video into/through the PC. The optical media all outputs fine on the HDMI port which I have plugged into a monitor jack, but the Tape side of the player has it's own outputs, and only uses CoAx and Composite
I play back PAL (R:2 and R:6) DVDs fine in ShowTime on my computer, but it would be nice to watch the tapes every now and then. Maybe with a good TV card I could eventually transfer the old tapes to DVD and HD-DVD as well (optimistic of my time, eh?)

Would I be better just getting a tuner-free card and a cable box, and use the box to change channels and set the card to 3/4 for everything?
I also just found the link (I'm blind to, right) https://www.videohelp.com/capturecards

    a) the current card only worked on a single OS I still had installed (XP x32), which I deleted, and no 64-bit drivers are available.
    b) the current card is analogue, and will be obsolute in every regard in short order.
    c) The cableco does not offer any analogue channels to digital subscribers, they are 100% digital (and have been for some time). The only way to get analogue channels at that point would be to order the sub-basic, (economy) package on my own.
    d) the current card can not input or output HDTV
    e) the current card does not support PAL format video

.... it's time for a new card. And I want the widest selection of inbound signal support for the lowest price. All it has to do is work reliably and have both 32bit and x64 (vista compatible) drivers. I don't care about much else .

I'll be moving in about a month and I was looking to buy a new TV card for my PC (the capture card I use now is from the 1990s, 1996 to be exact).

I'll have access to full cable, but all I'm really interested is getting the bottom 150 or so channels. I only watch about 5 channels for the most part anyway and all are included in basic and expanded basic cable. Anything beyond that I could ask to use the TV in their room.

Question: What do I need, what's best, and what can do it for less than $100 (or up to $150, if any?)

The connection/service is broadcast in digital cable transmission.

I will also be using the card for capturing video in both PAL and NTSC from a DVD player.

My understanding was the V-chip was a physical chip installed on the circuitry board of a Television. I've read a few different threads over at AVS and Video Hack that discussed removing the (a) chip or pulling a 5 volt cable from the board, among other options. My (mine and my fiancé's) issue was when I read that it was based solely on ratings. You could block sex or violence, but not those bible people. Since bible preachers are not properly rated as being at the very least TV14, or more appropriately MA, the censorship of the chip, (or apparently software), is slanted to protect christian values.
That explained; am I correct in now understanding that there is no physical chip, just firmware instructions; and would a television from a region that did not rate television not have such abilities.

On two total side notes; I'm not 13, if I was I'd just pull the plug and let the TV reset itself. I'm 27, a political activist, an international electronics entertainment columnist (writing for a total of magazines full time and six more part time), a foreign war veteran, and a supporting member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation. I'm also a firm believer, and in complete agreement with many state and federal judges' opinions, that hiding the realities of the world around us (both real such as the news, and fantasy such as religion and movies), from younger persons creates culture shock when they are old enough to see such things on their own, or learn to simply pull the plug on the tv to do a hard reboot.
