Wladimiro was born in Messina, Sicily to Giovanni and Rosalia Calarese. Wladimiro obtained his Ph.D. from New York University. Wladimiro worked for the American Government for 34 years, 25 of which were spent at Wright Pat Air Force base. He made many contributions to scientific research and acted as Chief Scientist at the end of his career. He published over 100 scientific publications worldwide.

Wladimiro was a four time Olympic medalist (2 bronze, 2 silver), and World Champion (gold) in sabre fencing as a representative of Italy. Wladimiro taught and coached fencing at Wright State University for many years until his health forced him to to give up his beloved sport.

Wladimiro was a beloved father, brother, husband, uncle, coach, teacher, and friend. At the time of his death, he was survived by his daughter, Mia Calarese; sister; Wanda Calarese of Rome, Italy and former wife, Barbara Dirr of West Alexandria, OH. A son, Gino Calarese, preceded him in death.

Wladimiro Calarese (3 October 1930 – 13 August 2005) was an Italian fencer. He won two bronze medals at the 1960 Summer Olympics and a silver at the 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics.[1][2]
