As far as I know hiking in this sense is only an American English useage. In the UK I have only ever heard it called 'leaning out' or 'sitting out'. Although I have sailed in the UK over 38 years the first I heard the term was on the film Stuart Little! Billlion 21:07, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
