Ronn D. Torossian (born 1974) is an American public relations executive and entrepreneur. He is the founder of the New York City-based 5W Public Relations firm (5WPR)[1], currently the 24th largest PR firm in the USA.[2] He is an active supporter of Israeli causes.

Biography

Torossian was born in Midwood, Brooklyn and grew up in The Bronx.[1] While at the University at Albany, State University of New York, Torossian became national president of the Israeli youth movement Betar, a youth organization affiliated with the conservative Likud party in Israel.[3] After college, he moved to Israel, and founded an organization called "Yerushalayim Shelanu" (Our Jerusalem), which worked to push Arab citizens of Israel out of Jerusalem.[3][4] He returned to the U.S. after a year and a half.[3]

Torossian began his career in public relations in 1998, helping then New York City Council speaker Peter Vallone, Sr.'s trip to Israel, and worked for the Likud Party in Israel.[1][5] In 2002 he was the media director for the Christian Coalition of America.[6] He was Vice President/Group Director for one of The InterPublic Group’s largest PR agencies, where he worked on large corporate accounts, including Clinique, Fox News Channel, DHL and others.[citation needed]

Torossian founded 5WPR in 2003.[1] The company was ranked 24th largest PR firm by net fees in the US in 2010.[2]

Growing up in The Bronx, Torossian reports being inspired by the activist Modern Orthodox rabbi Avi Weiss.[7]

Activities and opinions

Torossian believes in an aggressive style of PR promotion; The New York Times called him "brash and aggressively outspoken... the consummate scrappy publicist"[1]. His politics and his company’s tactics have been strongly criticized by some liberal Jewish media, criticism which has extended to Taglit-Birthright Israel a Jewish organization which employed his firm for public-relations work.[4][8] Rabbi Morris Allen, who heads an organization that exposed fraud in one of 5WPR's clients, called the firm's tactics in defending the client "outrageous, to say the least."[9] Torossian released a statement that said, "A senior staff member failed to be transparent in dealing with client matters. He has taken full responsibility."[10]

Torossian is active in supporting pro-Israeli causes, especially those associated with the Israeli right wing. He represents Binyamin Elon[11], a former Israeli Knesset member from the Moledet party, who is a strong supporter of Jewish settlement in the Occupied West Bank. He is active in Aish Hatorah, an orthodox Jewish organization. He is spokesman for the Hebron Fund, a US foundation that supports Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron[12]. He also works closely with Christian supporters of Israel, including the Christians United For Israel[11], led by TV evangelist John Hagee.

Torossian advocates for Jewish settlement of the West Bank and, in 1999, called Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu "a disaster" for his decision to temporarily freeze settlement construction to encourage peace talks. "I feel completely disenfranchised by Benjamin Netanyahu's vision and actions as head of Likud," he said in an interview to the New York periodical The Jewish Week. "I will never actively support him again."[13]. In an interview with the Forward in 2004, Torossian objected to the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization of the Palestinian Authority, which rules some of the West Bank. “The PLO or P.A., or whatever the gangsters call themselves today, have no place in Jerusalem,” he said. “I feel the need to speak truth to power.”[3]
