The 33rd Academy Awards, honoring the best in film for 1960, were held on April 17, 1961 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California. They were hosted by Bob Hope.

Due to an intense ad campaign and appeals to patriotism from producer John Wayne, The Alamo edged out more acclaimed films such as Psycho and Spartacus for a Best Picture nomination.

Prolific actress and movie star Janet Leigh received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Marion Crane in Psycho - the only one of her career.
