Charles Slert, Kathryn Murray and Kelley Schellong recall, Crescent City, California (2011)
An effort to recall Charles Slert from his position as mayor of Crescent City, California, was launched in August 2011. The recall effort did not result in a recall election. Slert resigned from his seat in December 2011, citing medical reasons.[1] A simultaneous effort to recall city council members Kathryn Murray and Kelley Schellong was initiated and abandoned.[1] All three officials survived a 2010 recall attempt.
Reasons for recall
The notice of intent to recall Slert stated: “Council member Slert: you’re not listening to us and we’re tired of being ignored. You voted to increase sewer rates again. Your record shows you voted to increase cost of living for City employees when my friends and neighbors are getting cuts in income.”[1]
Recall proponents also cited concerns about fluoride in the drinking water and Slert's opposition to the abolition of the downtown Business Improvement District (BID).[1] Crescent City voters defeated a ban on fluoride in a 2010 ballot measure.
Donna Westfall, a member of the city council who has previously backed seven unsuccessful efforts to recall Slert, Murray, and Schellong, claims not to be involved in the most recent recall effort.[1]
Path to the ballot
In August 2011, Slert, Murray and Schellong were served notices of intent to circulate a recall position. These notices require at least 20 signatures of registered city voters. Recall proponents would have needed to collect the signatures of city voters equal to at least 25 percent of those registered in the last gubernatorial election.[1]
