To call the Bayeux tapestry by any other name would be a piece of unpardonably pedantry, though in the narrower sense which the word had acquired it is no tapestry at all, the design being embroidered upon the material and not woven into it. To call it, as have often been done, the Tapestry of Queen Mathilde can less easily be defended. Its precise date and origin are still to some extent in dispute. Yet various lines of argument converge to suggest that it may very probably have been made in England to the order of Bishop Odo of Bayeux within twenty years of the events which it so vividly records.
