Wallets don't solve a problem. 🚫 I've been saying this for YEARS. Yet article after article comes out attempting to explain why consumers aren't using them at the rates 'they' expect. Wallets are just a layer. They're pass-thrus to a card or a bank account. The only problem they can "solve" for consumers is convenience. That's it. But to get consumers to even try them requires action on their part. Adding and verifying one of the funding accounts to the wallet. Read: #friction. Merchant POS adoption and UX flows are extremely inconsistent, adding to the confusion. Apple and Samsung have a big leg up since it's embedded into the O/S of their hardware. Much less work. But certainly not #frictionless So what's the only other way to improve adoption? #incentives - Rewards: the problem with rewards is that a true wallet enables multiple payment methods and the interchange that funds these programs goes to the issuer, not the wallet provider. Closed-loop wallets make sense here (Starbucks, Kroger, etc.) - Promotions: a more viable financial model where the wallet provider is compensated by the merchant for referring its user base. But this a typical chicken-and-the-egg scenario. It doesn't scale very fast - adoption rates prove this. #digitalwallets have a place and even I use them from time to time. Just wish the senseless industry debate over why consumers won't use them more would stop.
