Chief Sustainability Officer @ Microsoft | Combining technology, business, and policy for change

Four years ago, Microsoft committed to becoming a carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste company that protects ecosystems. We remain resolute in our commitment to meet our climate goals and to empower others with the technology needed to build a more sustainable future.   We are optimistic about the role technology will continue to play in accelerating climate progress, and we look forward to working with others on this critical journey for people and the planet.

But technology will not save us. We need to start aligning our economy, our existence with the physical reality and limits of our planet. Saying that, I believe Microsoft is doing a fantastic job in leading the way towards that by building a vision, a business case and a strong plan of implementation. Freeing ourselves from the economy-as-usual thinking and understanding your business rationale for net zero action is a crucial first step in the journey to net zero.

I hope corporate sustainability communication evolves from shiny videos to credible, informative updates. While sharing commitments is valuable and can inspire many, pairing them with concrete targets, tangible actions, and proven results would significantly enhance credibility.

We continue to be committed to becoming a carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste company that protects ecosystems! 🌎

Incredible production quality, perfectly scripted and intelligently marketed - but what TANGIBLE differences has Microsoft had on the environment when compared to the scale of energy, water, other natural resources, raw materials, etc, that are consumed by Microsoft? With there balance sheet I’m would imaging they could clean up a sizable portion of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch instead of $22B in 2022 stock but back?

Before we pat them on the back for their Corporate virtual signaling, perhaps we should look at the evidence thus far. The Seattle-based company’s total planet-warming impact is about 30% higher today than it was in 2020, according to the latest sustainability report published Wednesday.  https://finance.yahoo.com/news/microsoft-ai-push-imperils-climate-160020868.html

Determination and promises are not enough to combat climate change. I am taking action to build a team to restore degraded soils across Africa in 3 years with organic-form carbon produced by the complete decomposition and fermentation of all organic matter in 24 hours, to curb global warming and solve food problems.

How does sending millions of perfectly functional, but ineligible for Windows 11, computers to ewaste (or more likely, and worse, leaving them active and insecure) align with your stated corporate sustainability and security goals?

Please move at much as possible to the new gpt-4o model and its smaller footprint (and then keep moving to smaller, more sustainable, models as quickly a we moved to the original ones).
