Chief Sustainability Officer @ Microsoft | Combining technology, business, and policy for change

At Microsoft, with each emerging technology, with each new opportunity, we ask ourselves an important question: how can we advance sustainability? Today, I am excited to share our 2024 Environmental Sustainability Report. Since setting our ambitious targets in 2020, we have shared an annual snapshot of our progress and learnings in hopes that we might also help others on their sustainability journey. Over the last four years since setting our commitments, we have worked together to overcome bottlenecks and have accelerated progress in meaningful ways. The innovation and collaboration driven by our employees, partners, customers, Climate Innovation Fund portfolio companies, and so many more are what make progress possible. Ambitious sustainability targets require ambitious action. I invite you to read the report to learn more about our journey and continue this path with us to help create a more sustainable future. Melanie Nakagawa - I really love how focused Microsoft is on sustainability and in leading global change in this area. Super progress! While I worked at Microsoft for almost 24 years, I'm taking time away from work for a Sustainability graduate program at MIT presently. We are currently discussing strategies to move industries to carbon zero. We were wondering whether Microsoft's calculations to baseline current state and define strategies to achieve carbon negative by 2030 include the environmental cost of extracting natural capital that physically goes into infrastructure maintenance and growth, hardware costs, etc.? For the sustainability geeks it would be wonderful to get access to the data showing the calculations if available. Thanks in advance for anything you can share or a contact I can discuss this further with. Keep up the great work!
