The idea is simple... the initiative is powerful. Dutch sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) company, SkyNRG, has announced the launch of Project Runway, an innovative initiative designed to facilitate easier access to green jet fuel for airlines and corporations. This groundbreaking project utilizes the book-and-claim approach, offering a new pathway for reducing aviation emissions. Microsoft has joined Project Runway as a founding member, acting as the initial Scope 3 SAF claims buyer. This collaboration marks a significant step in integrating corporate sustainability efforts with aviation industry needs. "In collaboration with Microsoft, we’re offering the opportunity for airlines to access reliable guidance, more sustainable fuels, and shared costs, ensuring their SAF journey takes off with a strong tailwind," said Theye Veen, Chief Commercial Officer at SkyNRG. The book-and-claim approach allows SAF producers to provide airlines access to SAF while enabling them to share the SAF price premium with corporates aiming to reduce their Scope 3 aviation emissions. This method simplifies the complexities of SAF procurement and provides an effective strategy for airlines to cut greenhouse gas emissions. "Project Runway will enable a global SAF market transformation that we see as essential to decarbonizing air travel. ✈️ UK Jet Zero Council’s Flight100 Results Pave the Way for 100% so-called ‘Sustainable Aviation Fuel’ (#SAF) Adoption ✈️ Virgin Atlantic’s groundbreaking Flight100 has proven the viability and benefits of using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This transatlantic flight from London Heathrow to New York JFK showcased that SAF can seamlessly replace fossil fuels in existing aircraft infrastructure, achieving significant CO2 reductions and improved fuel efficiency. Key Highlights: 🔹Environmental Impact: Flight100 saved 95 tonnes of CO2, equating to 64% of emissions from a standard flight. This is comparable to removing 54 cars off the road for a year. 🔹 Air Quality Benefits: Use of 100% SAF resulted in a 40% reduction in particulate emissions, potentially improving local air quality and reducing contrail formation. 🔹 Efficiency Gains: SAF demonstrated a 1% higher energy density than fossil fuel, enhancing overall fuel burn efficiency. Operational measures such as direct routing and reduced taxi time saved an additional 2.2 tonnes of fuel. 🔹 Collaborative Effort: This success was made possible by the Virgin Atlantic-led consortium, including Boeing, Rolls-Royce, Imperial College London, The University of Sheffield, ICF and Rocky Mountain Institute, with support from the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and regulatory bodies. Call to Action: Virgin Atlantic urges the UK Government to support the scaling of SAF production through investment in a revenue certainty mechanism, aiming to establish a robust UK SAF industry, create 10,000 jobs, and generate nearly £2bn of economic value by 2030.
