Position Purpose:

To provide a continuum of services for students who have a primary language other than English. Services provided will be based upon the individual needs of each student and will integrate the involvement of family and school as well as curricular content. The ESL Teacher is responsible for providing direct, content-based ESL services to students through co-planning, co-teaching, and modeling. The ESL Teacher must have knowledge of second language acquisition and high quality literacy and language instructional practices. The ESL Teacher must communicate and collaborate regularly with educators and administrators to support teachers and students within universal instruction and positively impact student achievement.

Required Certifications/Licenses

Wisconsin English as a Second Language (1395), for the appropriate grade level

Bachelor's degree

Excel, Google Apps, and knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn Infinite Campus.

  • Work successfully in both independent, team, and small or large group settings.

Essential Functions

  • Annually complete and update student’s individualized Language Development Plan (LDP)
  • Implement model for ESL services based upon need of individual ELL students to include the following:
  • Reviewing and re-teaching prerequisite skills;
  • Organizing previously introduced material;
  • Reinforcing previously introduced material;
  • Differentiates curricula for each learner as needed;
  • Assisting with assignments;
  • Targeting learning strategies to ensure content knowledge acquisition;
  • Modifying assessment(s) in accordance with the student’s LDP.
  • Conduct Home Language Surveys; complete Enrollment forms
  • Conducts screener to determine eligibility for language services and support
  • Acts as a liaison between the student and other teachers, staff members, and family.
  • Administers assessments (ex. Forward, WIDA ACCESS, WIDA Screener)
  • Assists with accommodations for state/district assessments (ex. Forward, MAP).
  • Strives to employ the District’s philosophy of education, instructional goals and objectives, and performance expectations.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provides reports as required, and communicates with parents.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Apply/incorporate district curriculum guides and use Board of Education approved goals and objectives.
  • Develop goals, objectives and daily lesson plans with Board of Education approved curriculum.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different needs of students, including technology and whole-group/small-group or individual learning.
  • Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement and accesses interpreters and/or translators as needed.
  • Attends Building and District meetings (i.e. PLCs, Staff Meetings, Professional Learning)
  • Participates in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
  • Maintains an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies District requirements.
  • Attends established traditional school-sponsored activities (i.e., back-to-school night, open house, and other activities attended by classroom teachers and/or faculty members).
  • Participates in curriculum related and programmatic activities that are part of the regular District program.
  • Attends IEP, Section 504, RtI, or other related meetings necessary for student assessment and/or compliance with federal and/or state law.

Essential Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to six hours in an eight-hour day
  • Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to ten pounds without assistance in an indoor setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
  • Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
  • Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, copier, etc.
  • Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
  • Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy

Work Environment

This position will primarily be in the school setting.
