“I have had the distinct pleasure of engaging and collaborating with Baionne via a partnership with her company, Global Majority Consortium. I was particularly struck by her vision and commitment to developing an antiracist framework during our development of a pilot grant program. She brings deep integrity to the work, her colleagues and community. A natural teacher and connector, it was an honor to work alongside, and learn from her. I’d absolutely partner again in the future.”

What strategies can you use to motivate unmotivated students?
A personal connection is an entry way. Relationships are the foundation and then you must go beyond. Many folks will have a relationship & enable the very scholar they believe" in. As educators we must build authentic relationships with a high bar of accountability, & excellence all while teaching, facilitating, & role modeling the skills to achieve at high levels. Yes, engagement in classes, energy of the teacher, positive reinforcements matter. They're needed. Supporting scholars is like finishing a marathon, one step at a time. It all has to be symbiotic. The real root cause is not our scholars or teachers, it's systems that support compliance & schooling instead of education, love, antiracism & spirit; a true whole child approach.

What are the best ways to make the enrollment process student-centered?
Higher Education needs to start better understanding how their roles have exacerbated systemic oppression. Black Descendants of the Enslaved, Indigenous folks, and those intentionally forced to live below the poverty line should be centered in equity conversations regarding funding. Many universities have folks working in low paying jobs, with no tuition forgiveness. Folks working at universities/colleges they can never afford to attend. Then there is the aspect of acceptance and supports given during the process. There must be more intentionality, equity, and financial backing to dismantle what currently exists.

What are the best ways to make the enrollment process student-centered?
In relationships we tell folks to communicate the way the audience listens. Our youth are getting texts, watching tik-tok, and on IG. Make a video on how to. Put a link to a longer video with more info on You Tube or similar platform. Text reminders are easy and key as well. Language barriers for multi-lingual families is important. As well as lay-terms being used for all to understand even when English is the only spoken language. We must center antiracism in answering these questions, tech, language, translation, time and relationships. Send out a survey with an incentive asking why they're not following through, then fill the gap.
