About us

Educational Alliance (EA), one of New York City’s original settlement houses, was founded in 1889 to offer educational, social, and cultural services to Jewish immigrants arriving to the Lower East Side. Today, EA is a proudly Jewish institution that partners with the diverse communities throughout Lower Manhattan. We provide New Yorkers with high-quality, transformational programs that enhance their well-being and socio-economic opportunities, reflecting our belief that everyone in our city should be given the tools to thrive. #YouBelongHere

Tired of the same old dreck that passes for election analysis?  Me too! That’s why we’ve put together a panel on the presidential election at the 14th Street Y with some of the best political minds in our city. https://lnkd.in/gT_rnVt2 We’ll go way beyond the headlines to understand the forces driving the outcome of the election and the political landscape of the US. The panel will include: one of the premier political consultants in the country; the former Chair of the NYS Democratic Party, who is now a professor at Columbia; and a national correspondent from the New York Times who is one of the leading reporters covering the campaign. (And I’ll be the moderator!) It will be a fascinating discussion, and we’ll make it more fun by welcoming any attendees to join after for drinks after at a neighborhood bar in the East Village.  Hope to see you there! ************************ The Insider’s Guide to the Upcoming Election and What’s at Stake Thursday, September 26 | 7 PM | 14Y Theater Get tickets: https://lnkd.in/gT_rnVt2 Panelists include: Josh Isay, former CEO of SKDK and one of the country’s leading political consultants Lisa LererThe New York Times National Political Correspondent and co-author of "The Fall of Roe" Basil Smikle, PhD, former Executive Director of the NYS Democratic Party, Professor at Columbia University, and frequent commentator on CNN and MSNBC Moderated by RICH BAUM, President and CEO of Educational Alliance

On the way into my office at the Manny Cantor Center I took the picture below of Diana and her son, Mattias, on the first day of pre-school. Next that one is a picture of Noah arriving for his first day at the 14th Street Y. You can’t miss their pride and excitement at the year ahead. I’m thrilled to welcome our children back to school at Educational Alliance’s Manny Cantor Center and the 14th Street Y. Both of our pre-schools are unique, special programs that nurture young learners and ignite their curiosity. I feel so lucky to start each day walking through a lobby buzzing with the excitement of children starting their paths as lifelong learners. #preschool #nyc

Did you know that our Community Schools and Youth Development Program has a beehive?! 🐝 Learn more about the impact of the hive and how our afterschool/summer programs help change young lives:

Here’s an unexpected fact: Educational Alliance manages a bee hive.     And here’s an unexpected reason: to change lives.    At Educational Alliance, we run afterschool and summer programs for over 800 children in lower Manhattan.   These students attend public schools that often lack ample resources for enrichment. Additionally, many of the children are dealing with tough situations at home: some live in shelters, others are undocumented, and quite a few need more educational support than their schools can provide.     The bee hive that our students maintain is just one example of how we expose them to experiences that are unusual, intriguing, and educational. There’s a long list of what else they experience in our programs: trips to colleges, tutoring, homework help, visits to museums, music instruction, hands-on science, and much more.    The history of the Lower East Side is filled with stories of immigrants who came to this country and a spark was ignited that allowed them to flourish and to excel. They became entrepreneurs, scientists, and civic leaders.   Educational Alliance was at the center of many of those stories. We’re still here doing that same work throughout lower Manhattan, helping kids to discover all the potential that lies within themselves.     A few weeks ago, Educational Alliance learned that we had been awarded a five-year grant from New York State to make our afterschool programs even stronger and more enriching. In the video below - in which I interview Shawnia White, the Senior Director of Programs for our afterschool and summer programs - we discuss what we do and what this grant will mean for the hundreds of children and families that we serve here in Lower Manhattan. #nyc #education #nycschools #bees

President & CEO of Educational Alliance

Today is my one year anniversary as CEO of Educational Alliance and I'm celebrating it by posting pictures from my first graduation ceremony at the early childhood program in the Manny Cantor Center. The faculty is amazing and the quality of the education is extraordinarily high. What's also unique is that it combines UPK, Head Start and tuition funding. The result is a school that brings together the children and families from all parts of our community. From my perspective, being at the ceremony embodied so much of what I love about this job: community and the belief that every person should flourish. Below are some pictures of the kids and one of me with Martha Lee, our fantastic Senior Director of Early Childhood.
