As a member of the Network's Encore Entrepreneurship Affinity Group, I believe it's important that ALL of us who have started businesses as older adults change the #AI narrative that entrepreneurship is solely the province of young men. Would love to see comments by those who have started and are running businesses in their 50s and beyond. #EndAgeism #EncoreEntrepreneurship is real.
Keynote Speaker, Writer, Trainer and Consultant committed to Slaying the #Ageism Dragon. Topics: Ageism | Reframing Aging | Creating Age-Friendly Workplaces | Benefits to Business & Brands of Being Age-Inclusive
Who is an #entrepreneur? Here is what AI image generators suggest. They reflect and reinforce societal perceptions and biases. I know SO MANY people who are starting and growing their businesses who DON'T look like this. If you're one of them, can I ask you to include a photo and a line about your business in the comments, with the hashtag #IAmAnEntrepreneur? #AIbias #EndAgeism (and all the rest!)

May is #OlderAmericansMonth in the US. Let’s use this opportunity to: > Connect with #businesses and #brands — tell them to hire people over 50 and market to them with respect. > Connect with news and #media outlets — tell them to stop ageist language, headlines, images and stories. > Connect with your legislators — tell them to pass #POWADA (Protect Older Workers Against Discrimination Act. > Connect with #CareerOneStop Centers — tell them to offer skills training and other job search services to older job seekers. > Connect with #TheEncoreNetwork — join like-minded people who want to remove barriers and advance opportunities for people over 50. “Have an experimental mindset.” That’s the advice Chris Farrell has for people over 50 who are engaged in a job search. As a longtime journalist and chief economics contributor to Marketplace by APM, heard weekdays on NPR, Chris is also the author of “Purpose and a Paycheck” and “Unretirement.” He has interviewed and written about dozens of people who have found creative ways to work that are both rewarding and don’t involve an employer. He does #freelance work himself. So who better to set the stage for and lead our panel in a conversation about #nontraditional ways to work. Chris will be joined by John Andrews, Jacqueline (Jackie) Davis, MBA, Sylvia Fox and Robin Johnson Pounds to talk about their experiences as freelance, #consulting, and #contract workers. Each has pivoted from traditional jobs to mid- and late-career alternatives and they love the independence, flexibility and control that their new work offers. If you provide support to older workers in #transition, you can learn a lot from the experiences of Chris and our panel. Join us to hear their tips for finding a job without getting hired. Wednesday, May 15, 12-1 pm ET, 9-10 am PT. https://lnkd.in/eYhbeM6H Presented by The Encore Network and sponsored by WAHVE LLC, an employment agency placing at-home contract workers in the insurance industry.

Jacqueline (Jackie) Davis, MBA describes herself as a sick, frustrated corporate employee who dared to follow her dream of a better life. Today, she draws on her years in business and marketing to help women become KBBOs — “kick-butt business owners.” But her first venture was interior design, which took her across the US designing rooms that were featured on HGTV’s Decorating Cents. And along the way, she has been a contract worker for firms seeking her marketing expertise, a keynote speaker, a storyteller on the World channel’s Stories from the Stage, and the organizer of virtual birthday parties during the pandemic. What’s the theme that connects all these work experiences? It’s one of curiosity, awareness of your skills, and a willingness to try new things. Her motto is “Why not? What do I have to lose?” If you provide support to #olderworkers in #transition, you can learn a lot from Jackie’s experience. She’s one of many people over 50 who find #freelance, #consulting, #contract and other #nontraditionalwork. Join us to hear her tips, and those of other panelists, for finding a job without getting hired. Thinking about turning your #sidehustle or #hobby into an #encore? Check out this terrific article by Chris Farrell for Next Avenue!
"Turning a hobby into a career"—starts with passion and purpose, as Chris Farrell writes in this article for Next Avenue. Chris interviewed me drilling into my passion for wine-growing and winemaking in western Colorado. A "side hustle" as he would label it, also involves me writing about my experiences at my website, www.wineencore.com. Chris knows his stuff. He is a senior economics contributor for American Public Media's Marketplace and understands the necessary dynamics and challenges faced by older adults as they pursue their life-encore interests, which comes through in this article. His point is "right on" when he writes: "The entrepreneurship and creativity among older adults looking to turn their passions, hobbies, and side hustles into full-time enterprises is exciting. Traditional barriers between leisure (fun) and work (hard) crumble. Yes, they do crumble, as I continue to work through the business enterprise side of the equation. Thanks, Chris for telling my and other entrepreneurial stories! #encorecareers #sidehustle #northforkvalley #coloradowine #wineencore #westelksava https://lnkd.in/gdaAaPD6
