Check out KET - Kentucky Educational Television's new special report, which examines early childhood development in Kentucky. Experts, including Learning Grove VP of Advocacy Mike Hammons, discuss the importance of exposing children to reading, conversation, playing, and other activities during the first years of life to establish a foundation for learning. Parents, caregivers, and educators talk about the benefits of placing young children in structured educational settings, and policymakers detail recent efforts to increase pay for child care workers and support early childhood education facilities. #childcare #policy #kentucky #advocacy

Congratulations, Beth! Learning Grove’s Director of School Age Services, Beth Wiseman, has been selected to participate in the nationwide Afterschool Alliance Afterschool Ambassador program! The program identifies afterschool providers and advocates of special achievement and helps them raise their voices in support of afterschool. The Alliance selects 12 to 20 Ambassadors from some of most effective afterschool programs and advocacy organizations around the country each year, and then provides training, technical support, and some funding for their Ambassadorial activities throughout the school year, including coordinating a Lights On Afterschool community event; reaching out to policy makers and the media on afterschool issues; and more.

A recent report from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Administration for Children and Families (ACF) reminds us how important it is for young children to have access to high quality early learning opportunities. Their key findings reinforce how important OUR work at Learning Grove is for our children, youth, and families: - Participating in ECE helps children to develop skills that will benefit them in school and in life. Specifically, research from the United States shows that ECE can help children learn the foundational skills for reading, math, self-control, and positive relationships. - Children benefit most when ECE is high-quality. High-quality ECE programs go beyond basic health and safety requirements to provide warm, responsive relationships with educators, stimulating and developmentally appropriate curricula, and ongoing training for educators. These features of ECE enhance children’s cognitive and social-emotional development. - All young children can benefit from high-quality ECE, but it can be especially helpful for children from families experiencing low household income, children with disabilities served in inclusive classrooms, and dual language learners. - The benefits of high-quality ECE for the child often last into kindergarten, and some studies show lasting effects into middle school and high school.
