Wimbledon director reveals they are prepared to be 'reactive' in order to ensure Andy Murray's doubles swansong with Emma Raducanu DOESN'T clash with England's Euro 2024 quarter final

  • The BBC are eager to prominently show England at the Euros and Wimbledon
  • On Saturday there is the possibility Andy Murray's doubles and England clash
  • Tournament organisers accepted they need to be 'reactive' to any problems

Andy Murray's Wimbledon swansong in mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu may clash with England's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland, the tournament's organiser conceded.

Many are eager to stay across both, particularly with Murray facing the prospect of his final match at Wimbledon.

For tournament organiser Jamie Baker, England's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland, which kicks off at 5pm on Saturday, means the scheduling team at Wimbledon will be 'reactive' in bid to avoid double-up.

'We just consider it one of the challenges going through the tournament,' Baker said on Friday.

'It's not unusual. It's happened quite often. Andy and Emma will be on tomorrow's schedule definitely, but whether they get on depends on what happens today and what court depends on what happens tomorrow.

'Obviously Emma is playing singles today so again, a bit will depend on what happens with that result.'

Pressed more specifically on whether plans are in place given the obvious TV interest on the BBC to give prominence to both England's match and the Raducanu-Murray doubles, Baker accepted the fluidity of how long tennis matches run complicate things.

'The things that we have to juggle is that with the football matches we know exactly what time they are but with tennis matches you don't know exactly what time,' he added.

'You have to be a little bit reactive and we have a huge team of people who are very experienced so it's bread and butter for them those things.'

Raducanu wore an England football team jersey earlier this week in the build-up to her opening singles match and she has been watching the progress of Gareth Southgate's team closely, so much so she named them after her first round win.

There is also the possibility that while initially being scheduled to play on Saturday, a backlog of matches caused by downpours on Friday push their meeting back even further.

'It's going to be a difficult day where we don't get a lot of tennis,' Baker added on Friday.

'It's a couple of things: yes, we obviously are going to be behind with doubles matches primarily and some of the singles matches on the outside courts.'

Murray was given a rousing send-off on Centre Court following his men's doubles defeat alongside brother Jamie on Thursday night.

Eager to give Murray a send-off on Centre, Baker revealed that that formed part of the thinking as to why the tributes weren't saved until after the mixed.

'There's quite a lot of uncertainty around mixed doubles with people playing multiple events and the scheduling is quite a lot harder,' he said.

'We were very committed to wanting to do the celebration on Centre Court, obviously, and as the days go on we've got big singles matches and with them being in the doubles we wanted it to happen on Centre Court.

'So, there were a few different things, and also a lot of variables. They could have won three matches or four matches and equally with the mixed doubles, Emma is still in singles and we don't quite know how that schedule is going to pan out so that was some of our thinking.'
