JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon has held private talks with Nikki Haley because he thinks she is the only candidate that can save the economy

JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon believes Nikki Haley is the only 2024 candidate who can save the US economy and has held private talks with her in a boost to her bid to catch frontrunner Donald Trump.

Haley, an accountant by trade, has emerged as a strong candidate in the field dozens of points behind Trump and is earning high-profile supporters after Sen. Tim Scott suspended his campaign over the weekend.

Earning Dimon's backing could help propel Haley further and secure her spot as the No. 2 candidate ahead of the fourth primary debate next month as the GOP field continues to narrow.

Dimon believes Haley is the best person to save the struggling U.S. economy.

The former UN Ambassador has said on several occasions that America needs an accountant in the White House amid a series of economic and financial disasters in the U.S. – including record-high inflation and a recession.

Dimon has held a series of informal phone calls with Haley in a sign of growing enthusiasm among donors for her candidacy, a top banking source told Axios.

Haley, before serving as UN Ambassador under former President Trump, was the governor of South Carolina – at the time becoming the first Indian-American to hold office in the Palmetto State. 

After South Carolina Sen. Scott suspended his candidacy for president over the weekend, donors and supporters who once backed his run have flocked to Haley's camp. 

Despite this, Scott's exit from the race has not made a huge impact on polling.

An NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll released last month showed Trump, as usual, in first place with 43 percent – and Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis tied for second with 16 percent each. Scott earned 7 percent in that poll among likely Iowa caucusgoers.

Reallocating horse race numbers to the second-place choice after Scott suspended his campaign, DeSantis and Haley only climbed two points each and remain distant second to Trump.

Haley's strong debate performances have led Republicans to think that she could get past Trump – and take on Biden in the 2024 general election.

Dimon is impressed with Haley's economic grasp and recognition of the intersectionality of business and government.

Campaign staff and donors were blindsided by Scott's announcement on Fox News Sunday evening that he was ending his bid for president just four days after the third GOP debate where he publicly debuted his relationship with interior designer Mindy Noce.

Eric LeVine, a major donor who was campaigning for Scott in New York, and fellow donor and metal magnate Andy Sabin, now say they will support former UN Ambassador Haley's campaign for president.

Other donors also indicated that after Scott's suspension, they are looking to Haley as their backup – and not frontrunner Donald Trump or de facto second placer DeSantis.

LeVine told the Associated Press that he was caught off guard by news Scott was dropping out and is planning to soon host a fundraiser for Haley.

Meanwhile, Sabin, known as a Republican kingmaker, said he would also support Haley's bid.
