Worker at Hinkley Point C nuclear power station construction site dies after 'traffic incident'
- Hinkley Point C in Somerset is to be the site of two brand new nuclear reactors
- Emergency services were called to the scene at around 8.30am on Sunday
- The site, run by EDF, employs 8,000 people to help build the power station
A worker at Hinkley Point C construction site in Somerset has died after a 'construction traffic incident' on Sunday morning, EDF Energy has said.
Hinkley Point C is the name of a nuclear power station which is currently being built following Hinkley Point A and B.
Hinkley Point C is an environmentally controversial project, with some campaigners saying the government should be funding renewable fuels instead.
The circumstances leading up to the incident and the exact nature of the incidents itself are currently unknown.
Avon and Somerset Police said emergency services were called at around 8.30am to a report that a man had been injured by machinery at Hinkley Point C.
The incident happened at Hinkley Point C in Somerset early on Sunday morning
Hinkley Point C is under construction and is owned by EDF, who own all eight of the UK's nuclear power stations
The site has been a hive of construction for months, with EDF previously saying construction was going well
The force said: 'Sadly, despite the efforts of the ambulance service, the man died a short time later.
'His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
'We're liaising with the Health and Safety Executive and our enquiries into the incident are ongoing.'
The incident happened during 'planned work activities', EDF Energy said.
The company is involved in the construction of a new, twin reactor nuclear power station being built at the site.
Nigel Cann, delivery director at Hinkley Point C, said: 'We are very sad to confirm that one of our team was involved in a fatal construction traffic incident this morning during planned work activities.
'The incident is being investigated by the police and the Health and Safety Executive, and we will co-operate fully with the authorities.
'Work at the site has been stood down and we are offering support to colleagues affected by this tragic event.
'Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.'
According to EDF, around 8,000 people currently work on the site in Somerset, which is to become the home of two brand new nuclear reactors.
French-owned EDF operates all of Britai's eight nuclear power plants which privide around 13 percent of the country's electricity.
Hinkley Point C is expected to start generating electricity in 2026.
Hinkley Point A, the first nuclear power station at the site on the north Somerset coast, stopped operating in 2000 and is being decommissioned.
Hinkley Point B began operating in 1976 and stopped generating electricity at the beginning of August this year.
