This work addresses the problem of idolatry from the questions that arise in the Apocalypse of Abraham. Although this problem is almost a commonplace of the criticism of the Hebrew prophetism to the metaphysics of power structures, shining even for its originality, the criticism of the Apocalypse of Abraham also offers a new philosophical approach little known in theological studies and philosophical. The strategy that is developed in this research consists of analyzing this critique from the appropriation of the concept of fetishization and from the perspective of the critique of Marxist ideology. In this way, this book presents a dialogue between exegesis and philosophy in the context of the problems and approaches of Latin American theology, and from a literature so little studied in this context, such as that of Second Temple Judaism. Colonial Latin America Review
Review - Idolatry and the construction of the Spanish Empire (Mina García Soormally) / Guardians of idolatry. Gods, demons, and priests in Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón's Treatise on the heathen superstitions (Viviana Díaz Balsera)2020 •
Two recent studies of the medieval and early modern Spanish world by professors Mina García Soormally and Viviana Díaz Balsera return us to what Inga Clendinnen called the ‘“concealed and mysterious dialects” of European and native interaction’ or to what Kenneth Mills has referred to as the propensity of idolatry and Christianity to meet as well as to compete. The return is a timely one, since the imbrication of race, religion, and colonization points not only to historical concerns in need of further elaboration, but also to present and pressing global, political, and economic entanglements. In engaging these works in the here-andnow, I could not help but recall the rhetorical arguments made by the Islamic State—the ones that hinge largely on the category of idolatry (shirk), finding in it a thing at once mobile and capacious enough to catalyze an alternative vision of sovereignty and a critique of what are purportedly understood and felt as imperial incursions. As both of these studies insist, shorthand categories that judge and pretend to describe material religious practice — as idolatry does — twist and turn in ways that are never far from questions of recognition, othering, and power.

The Bible & Critical Theory
The Sublime Object(s) of Idolatry: Prophetic Aniconism and the Ideological Formation of the Subject2020 •
In the prophetic corpus of the Hebrew Bible, a number of passages decry the creation and worship of physical representations of deities. While previous studies have examined the diachronic development of aniconism and the possibility that the Israelites did possess cult images of YHWH, this topic can be explored further, specifically as it relates to its ideological dimension. Slavoj Žižek's psychoanalytic resuscitation of Hegel produces an ontology in which the "subject" is a conceptual vassal of the condition of lack in the Other. Žižek's discussion of the effects of the removal of "sublime" elements from the symbolic order is a helpful lens for reading the prophetic polemics against cult statues. It is the intention of the present study to utilize this theory to contribute a new understanding of the ideological role these aniconic texts play in the construction of the subject.
