An inclusive Brisbane event will be held this Saturday to celebrate International Non-Binary Day.
The day is recognised on July 14 every year, and one of the event’s organisers Jade Mirabito said the event came about in response to transphobia and to give Brisbane’s gender diverse community and their allies a safe, inclusive place to celebrate.
“We noticed International Non-Binary Day was coming up, and we decided that having a party to celebrate non-binary people and all the wonderfulness that they are would be a great way to do that,” Jade said.
The event will be split into two separate events at Betty’s Espresso & Bar in South Brisbane: a market stall from 3pm to 5pm and an evening party from 6pm onwards.
“For the market stall we’ve got about 10 different non-binary stall holders who will be showcasing and selling their art and crafty things they do,” Jade said.
Entry to the event will be free for non-binary people, and by donation for supportive binary friends with proceeds going towards event costs and the non-binary performers and creators.
“We’re going to have performers throughout the evening. We’ve got a cuddle pit which we’ll be setting up, a photobooth, and games happening through the night,” Jade said.
“It’ll be more house party than dance party, quite casual and informal.
“We really want to focus on making it an accessible event for everyone, including those people with disabilities, low socioeconomic status and young people who can’t always access LGBTIQAP+ parties. The toilets at Betty’s are gender neutral.
“We’re very happy that Betty’s was so willing to host us, we’ve had so much support from the venue.”
