Daniel Abt to race in the ATS Formula 3 Cup
(30.11.2009) The 2010 ATS Formula 3 Cup grid will feature a prominent name! Daniel Abt, the son of DTM Team Principal Hans-Jürgen Abt, will make his debut in Germany’s fastest single-seater series. Daniel Abt will contest the 2010 season at the wheel of a Dallara-Volkswagen entered by championship winners Van Amersfoort Racing.
With this step, the 16-year old German continues his consequent way up the motor-racing ladder. From karting via the ADAC Formula Masters to the ATS Formula 3 Cup. In addition, Abt will become a Volkswagen Junior, thus joining the Volkswagen motor-sport promotion programme.
“We’d like to welcome Daniel as member of the Volkswagen family,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “He impressively demonstrated his skills by winning the ADAC Formula Masters title in superior style. Now we are delighted with also making his next step on the motor-racing ladder together.” With a total of eight race wins, Daniel secured the title in the young-gun series early, on the penultimate race weekend, and gathered first Formula 3 experiences in a guest appearance in the ATS Formula 3 Cup season finale.
The young gun massively looks forward to his new challenge. “Christmas has been in November for me, this year,” says the technical-school pupil. “Following the ADAC Formula Masters, the ATS Formula 3 Cup represents the perfect next step to keeping on learning and attracting attention. And having the chance of making this step together with Volkswagen and the 2009 championship winning team is just great. I will give my very best to justify their trust in me with good performances.”
Daniel will represent a true asset to the ATS Formula 3 Cup grid. After all, his involvement means that the third Abt generation will take the wheel of a racing car. For Team Van Amersfoort racing, the newcomer represents an honour and motivation at the same time, underlines team Principal Frits van Amersfoort. “I’m really proud of the fact that Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen and Hans-Jürgen opted for our team,” he says. “I’m convinced of Daniel’s talent and now it’s up to us to provide him with a car that has got what it takes to win races.”
